Simple iPhone 1.1.2 Upgrade Instructions (with Unlock)

Comments for this post are now closed and the guide is made available for reference only. I have published my guide to jailbreaking and unlocking firmware 1.1.3, please refer to that to upgrade to the newer firmware version.

I have been messing around for a day or so trying to get this to work, but I think I’ve nailed the method for upgrading an unlocked and jailbroken iPhone to firmware 1.1.2, and preserving the unlock and jailbreak. What follows are the steps to get your iPhone to 1.1.2 written as simply as I could manage. These instructions look long (and they are), but they are easy to follow and anyone with basic computer skills should be able to get it done. Remember: there is no predicament that you can get your phone into that can’t be repaired.

Note: I do not warrant these instructions. While I have taken the utmost care in writing them, and have performed the steps on my own iPhone successfully, you can break things and I am not responsible if you brick your phone (though I will try and help if you do).

Now that we have that out of the way, here are the steps. This assumes you are currently using firmware 1.1.1; if you need a guide for getting to 1.1.1, leave a comment and if there is demand for it I will make one. You also need access to a WiFi network with internet access. If you don’t wish to unlock your phone, instead just performing a jailbroken upgrade, skip to step 4.8. It is possible to run the unlock application from within firmware 1.1.2, but I do not recommend it – there have been reported problems doing so, and doing it this way is the safe bet.

  1. Prerequisites
    • Conceited Software’s 1.1.2 jailbreak tools (here)
    • the iphone-elite team’s custom anySIM 1.2u (here)
    • Apple’s iPhone firmware 1.1.1 package (here)
    • Apple’s iPhone firmware 1.1.2 package (here)
    • AppTap Installer for Windows users (here), or iNdependence 1.3.2 beta for Mac users (here)
  2. Upgrade to 1.1.2 through iTunes

Surprisingly, step one is to actually perform an upgrade. This may sound counter-intuitive, but to unlock the device, you need to be running the latest version of the baseband firmware (the part that controls the phone functions of the device). If you are running firmware 1.1.1, you are ready to do the upgrade.

    1. Connect your iPhone to iTunes, let it recognize it as unactivated.
    2. With the phone still plugged in, hold the power and home buttons until the screen goes black, then let go of just the power button while still holding the home button. Within about 10 seconds, iTunes should say it has detected an iPhone in restore mode, but the device’s screen should still be black. If the iPhone’s screen isn’t still black, try again.
    3. Hold the shift key if you are running Windows, or the option key on a Mac, and click the restore button in iTunes.
    4. Browse to where you saved the 1.1.2 firmware file from the prerequisites section. It should end with .ipsw, if it doesn’t, rename it first.
    5. Your iPhone should sucessfully flash to firmware 1.1.2 and restart.
  3. Downgrade to firmware 1.1.1

This is a crucial step if you are unlocking your device. The iphone-elite team’s unlock application works great on the latest baseband version, but only runs from firmware 1.1.1. Here’s how to roll back to firmware 1.1.1, but continue running the new baseband:

    1. Connect your recently updated phone to iTunes, let it recognize it as unactivated.
    4. Browse to where you saved the 1.1.1 firmware file from the prerequisites section. It should end with .ipsw, if it doesn’t, rename it first.
    5. iTunes will flash your phone, but will fail with error 1015, this is expected.
    6. Close iTunes. If you are using a Mac, extract and run iNdependence, which should bring your phone back to the activation screen after a minute or so. Windows users, run AppTap Installer. It will fail, but should still bring your iPhone to the activation screen.
  4. Activate firmware 1.1.1, install Installer.app

With your phone at the activation screen:

    1. Slide to get to the emergency call screen
    2. Enter *#307# and press call, your phone will start ringing
    3. Delete the numbers just entered, enter 0 and press call. This will take you to a screen where you can answer the incoming ‘call’
    4. Press answer, then hold, and when the phone starts ringing again, press decline. You will now be in the phone application
    5. Go to Contacts, then add a new contact. Add the URLs prefs://11 and http://jailbreakme.com to the contact and save it
    6. Press the prefs://11 URL, which should take you to the WiFi configuration screen. Configure for your WiFi access point as normal, then press the Settings button at the top of the screen to go to the settings menu, select General and turn Auto Lock to never. Press the home button
    7. You will now be at the activate screen. Slide to go to the emergency call screen, enter 0 and press call and your phone will start to ring. Press answer, then hold, then when the phone starts ringing again, press decline. You will be back in the phone application
    8. Select the second URL on the contact you created in step 5. This will open Safari with jailbreakme.com open. Scroll to the bottom and press Install AppSnap. Your phone should go back to the activate screen, then restart itself after a few minutes. If it doesn’t, restart it manually and try again from step 7. Otherwise, once it restarts you should have an activated iPhone with the Installer.app on your home screen
  5. Unlock and prepare the iPhone for firmware 1.1.1
    1. Run Installer.app and let it download any required updates
    2. Select Install at the bottom of the screen, scroll to System and install the BSD Subsystem, then scroll to the Network category and install OpenSSH. Reboot your phone
    3. Extract the AnySIM zip file from the prerequisites section and rename the resulting folder to anySIM.app
    4. Connect your phone to your WiFi network and note it’s IP address, which can be seen by pressing the small arrow beside the network name in the settings screen. From your PC, open an FTP program that is compatible with SFTP (WinSCP on Windows, Fetch on a Mac).
    5. Enter your iPhone’s IP address to connect to, then the username root and password alpine
    6. Browse to /Applications on your phone and upload the entire anySIM.app folder to your phone. You should now have the folder /Applications/anySIM.app full of files
    7. In your SFTP program, open the folder you just uploaded, and right click (Ctrl click on a Mac) on the first file in the list (it should just be called ‘anySIM’). In Fetch, select Get Info, then in the new window expand the Ownership and Permissions section and check the box next to Execute in the Owner section. In WinSCP, select Properties, and check the box next to X in the Owner section near the bottom of the new window.
    8. Restart your iPhone, then press the new anySIM icon on your home screen. Follow the instructions from anySIM
    9. Once the above is complete, run Installer.app, select the ‘Tweaks (1.1.1)’ category, and install OktoPrep
  6. Upgrade to firmware 1.1.2 and jailbreak
    1. Connect your iPhone to your computer and allow iTunes to detect it
    2. Hold the shift key if you are running Windows, or the option key on a Mac, and click the update button in iTunes.
    3. Browse to where you saved the 1.1.2 firmware file from the prerequisites section. It should end with .ipsw, if it doesn’t, rename it first.
    4. Your phone should upgrade without a problem, then return to the activation screen on firmware 1.1.2. Close iTunes and extract Conceited Software’s jailbreak tools. From the extracted files, Windows users double click on ‘windows.bat,’ Mac users double click ‘jailbreak.jar.’
    5. Check the Install SSH box, then enter a password that will be used if you want to connect to your device later on, then click the big jailbreak button. This will jailbreak your phone, activate it, and fix YouTube so it will work

For those users using SIM cards from a country that currently sells the iPhone, such as the US, UK, and Germany, that’s it! You now have an activated, jailbroken, and unlocked iPhone ready to go.

Users that are attempting to use a SIM card from another country, you still have a few more steps to go. Flick over to the next page for the meat.

  • kav: Just run iNdependance or iBrickr and let it kick it our of restore mode, as in step 2.6
  • kav
    hi
tnks for all these instructions it did work until i had to upgrade 1.1.2. when i upgraded it stayed on the recovery mode
    any sugestion plz?
  • Gabriel: As the guide says, just run it. It doesn't matter what you pick, it will fail, but will bring your phone back out of restore mode.
  • Gabriel
    Hi.

I've just bought one iPhone from States and tried to follow these instructions. After installing 1.1.1, when I've run AppTap, it shows me that the options for a firmware are: 1.0.0, 1.0.1 and 1.0.2. Is this ok? Or should I have an option with 1.1.1?

I've followed exactly the steps 1,2 and 3.

    Many thanks,
    Gabriel.
  • Brutus: If you used your head and actually read my initial reply, you would see I told you that you don't have to unlock again. anySIM can't unlock your phone because it is already unlocked.
  • Brutus
    Hi Brad,

    REALLY DESPERATE NOW.

I have diligently followed your instructions up to 4.8 using anySim to unlock. It looks fine but at the end, it says: "Please restart your iPhone. anySIM cannot unlock this phone. anySIM will now quit. Please turn off your phone and turn it on again after anySIM quits." The anySIM I used was downloaded from the link above and it shows 1.2.1u for 4.02.13G*.

I had checked the modem model prior to doing this and it says 4.02.13G.

    What can I do now?

    Et tu Brute ? :P

    Sorry for that...

I think The anysim 1.1.2u is the same thing... there was probably some corruption is the entire unzipping and file transferring..

I suggest U restore to 1.1.2 and follow the steps again
and by Zeus' grace and the lion that lyeth on the capitol

    Hi Brad,

I had some difficulty locating the Applications folder in the iPhone via the Fetcher. Somehow I was lucky in checking other websites and found that I needed to use Port 22 and start the folder at /.

I was able to then copy the AnySim.app into the Applications folder of the iPhone. I also check if the permission is appropriate which without me doing anything it's already 755 for the Owner section.

I then tried to activate the phone using AnySim but to my amazement, the slider doesn't respond. After a few try, I made a bold (not sure it's wise) assumption that the AnySim1.1.2u in the Installer Application is the same as the one I put into the iPhone earlier. So, I installed the AnySim1.1.2u via the Installer App and it didn't give me any trouble.

So, I finished 5.4 and then 5.5 but the iPhone now requires me to restore. What should I do? SHould I restore again to 1.1.2?

    THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR HELP!

    BRUTUS

  • Brutus: If you read the guide, I linked to the correct version of the MobileDevice framework, but none the less I have updated the guide to use a version of iNdependace that works with iTunes 7.6 to make it easier. In future, read the guide before you post comments.
  • Brutus
Thanks Brad. I was able to step 2.5, but as I open the iNdependence.app, it doesn't support itunes 7.6. Anyway to downgrade my itunes to 7.5 or other suggestions?

    Again, many thanks!
  • Brutus: Start the guide again from step 2, except iTunes won't recognize your phone for a start, and you won't need to unlock again.
  • Brutus
    Hi Brad,

My iphone is a 1.1.1 otb, jailbroken and unlocked by AnySim 1.1. I was hoping to upgrade to 1.1.3 and thought I would follow your instructions to first update to 1.1.2. I did it but somehow the iphone gave an error msg: "Incorrect Sim, Insert an unlocked and valid SIM to activate iPhone. I connected the iphone to my mac and the itunes say similar thing. The iTunes also doesn't give me the update or restore function, just nothing but the message on "incorrect sim..." [edited for length]
  • paul: Just start the guide, if you haven't unlocked, you won't have a problem.
  • paul
    hello brad...

My iphone currently have firmware 1.0.2 and is jailbroken (not unlocked). How to i get to 1.1.1 to start the guide?
  • Hemi: I would imagine that you are trying to download the file using Safari, which is automatically unzipping it for you. You can either turn off that behavior in Safari's preferences, or grab it using Firefox.
  • Hemi
    Hello all,
Just a quick Q ! does anyone know how to get the 1.1.2 firmware that I just downloaded to go into ispw or the little lego looking icon??? I have renamed it and nuthing happend!! HELP! I am stuck in 1.1.1 ....lol thanks the noob!
  • Joe
hey Brad, thanks for the answer. I did it all again and it looks like everything works. Just at the VERY end after it says congratulations, your phone will reboot a couple of times and then be activated! It doesnt. It reboot once with the usb-itunes logo again. But it read my german sim card and what not. Looks like everything is supposed to have worked actually. Just cant get the phone off of the activation screen again...WAIT...just thought I would try to use independence to get it off that screen again and it totally worked! thanks dude! I think it's really great that you give up your time to help so many people. We are all very grateful for you. Thanks so much man.
    -Joe
  • Joe: It shouldn't have been on the restore screen before running the jailbreak.jar. I'd say something has gone wrong along the way, just restart the guide from step 2 and don't worry about running anySIM again.
  • Joe
    Hey Brad,

Want to thank you for your wonderful guide. Don't know what I would have done without you. Well...here is my dilema. I have one of the original iphones, tried cracking it, didnt work. I tried too many times I think so I revirginized it sucessfully. Now after trying your guide for the first time since revirginizing it, I go to the VERY END exept that after i ran jailbreak.rar on my mac, it told me it was succcessful and that the phone would reboot a few times then be done. It didnt...it rebooted once, then is still stuck on the usb-itunes screen. I tried rebooting manually a few times with no luck. Any suggestions? Thanks so much man. -Joe
  • Brian
    Brad-

I just finished the process again and it worked! Not sure what was different, but at least it is working now.

    Thanks for your great instructions.
  • Brian: You don't have to unlock the phone again, the unlock persists.
  • Brian
Thanks. I am trying that now, but anySIM is not working. Cuts out halfway through and tells me that it cannot unlock the phone.
  • Brian: Sounds like a dodgy screen, which seems to be a recurring problem. Before jumping to conclusions though, complete step 2 of the guide again and see if the screen works on a fresh install of firmware 1.1.1.
  • Brian
    Brad-

Thanks for the easy instructions! I followed them pretty easily (except for having iTunes open when installing AppTap Installer).

I am having a problem with the slider not working on my phone now that everything is run.

I tried the fixes that were mentioned in the comments (entering the command in Putty and modifying the anySIM.app file [which did not exist after everything was done, so I reinstalled through SSH and modified the Owner field]), but I still cannot use the slider. The phone boots up fine and connects to T-Mobile, then the screen goes black and I cannot get it to turn back on. Also, during the initial boot when it is connecting to the network, the slider does not work.

Any other ideas on how to fix? I am stumped.
  • Ryan: Did you do the instructions on the second page? If you did, you can manually put an APN into the plist file, but that is a really odd problem to have.
  • Ryan
I try to change my APN ... General -> Network -> EDGE ->...
but when I type in my APN and try to move on... it just blanks out to my home screen. I've tried it a hundred times... any suggestions?
  • Claire: I'm happy for you, but please don't spam the comments with unrelated stuff. Had to cut your comment down.

Joshua: I've already suggested something, try it.
  • Joshua h
    brad,

I tried a few things... But my youtube still doesn't work... I followed your steps all the way to the end but the tutorial said "your youtube will work" and it didnt... Any suggestions?
  • Claire
    Hi Brad!
I now have my 1.1.2 OTB working with my Australian Vodafone SIM card using StealthSIM and jailbroken using your guide!

Thanks again! Will be directing friends to your site :-)
  • Dave Todd: The release of firmware 1.1.3 will help, but the new bootloader is a pain.

todd: Follow the jailbreak instructions in the guide, just ignore uploading and running anySIM, then perform the steps on the following page to enable your phone to work in your country.

Chaitanya: Donations aren't necessary, but if you are really keen get in contact with me on the contact page. OpenSSH doesn't take much space at all, you don't have to remove all applications to do a 1.1.3 upgrade, but you will have to remove some music and videos.
  • Chaitanya
How do we donate to u brad?
    AND i would suggest
all of u NOT TO CHECK INSTALL OPENSSH in the jailbreaking options because if you want to upgrade to 1.1.3 later it is nessesary to uninstall all apps to free space....

You can load openssh using the installer app instead... :)

    Thanx

hi brad..great forum. i read thru most to see that i wont ask the same tired question. i recently unlocked a 1.1.2 otb with the software/hardware solution using a sonic sim 2 card i bought in the usa. i have no problems so far using my former att card (not the iphones att card)...except that i also live partime in thailand and try using the local gsm cards. it recognizes service but when i open sms or phone. they close or show ive received calls/sms but wont allow me to open. i once read about gsm compalibilty in other countries....and iphone. is there a program you are aware of that might be helpful? if i reinsall my att card with the sonic sim..i get full service even from thailand....thanks in advance for your time todd.....
  • dave todd
Hi again Brad , still doing the sterling work ? Just a quick one , are you any nearer unlocking the 1.1.2 otb version yet ?
  • JC: The only real way that happens is if something has gone wrong with the firmware upgrade. Just start the guide again at step 2. iTunes won't recognise your phone until you put it into the special restore mode though.
  • JC
    Hey Mr. Brad,

Well, I follow everything step by step... it took me 7 hours... insane! Wow, I can´t imagine what all the hackers have to go through! Unfortunately, my iPhone is just showing the Apple logo. I think I´m just gonna throw it in the garbage.... yeah right!? Im so tired. What do I do? Virginize it?

I bought my iPhone the same day it got out. I was using at&t since then, but I moved to Dom Republic and I just want to be able to use my phone!!!!!! Damn it! I was running 1.1.2 and it was already unlucked. I just wanted to fix the SMS crash and the dialing (numbers) part on the Phone. I recorded a very important conference!!

(Sorry, I´m frustrated and extremely tired) Thanks!
  • Claire: You should have iTunes 7.5 idealy, I haven't tried the process with version 7.6, but it shouldn't matter for this part of the guide.
  • Claire
    Thanks Brad.

Yes I'm definitely doing an upgrade in iTunes. Will check my Java version.

Should the version of iTunes matter?
  • Claire: Can't say I've seen that before. The two things I would suggest are to make sure you are doing an upgrade in iTunes and not a restore, and to head to http://java.com and update your version of Java.
  • Claire
    Hi Brad,
Thank you very much for your detailed instructions and answering all our questions. This is by far the best set of instructions available on this subject.

I have followed the guide a couple of times but keep getting the same issue in step 5 when running the final jailbreak after updating to 1.1.2.
Once jailbreak.jar runs and the phone restarts iTunes automatically opens and says its detected a phone in recovery. This seems to then be stopping the phone restarting itself and finnishing the process.

I imagine this is simple, so sorry for the question, but would appreciate your help!
  • junaid: You will have to run it from another computer. There are certain computers that just can't run it, I haven't worked out why yet.

Joshua: Go into installer and add the source "i.unlock.no," then go to the Unlocking Tools category and install the YouTube activation hack. I don't know why it wouldn't have worked for you automatically, but that should get you going.

    Has9: Follow the guide.
  • Has9
    Hey Brad ...

I have completed the downgrade to 1.1.1 but I am not able to transfer anySIM 1.2u from my computer to the phone. Is there any place on internet where I can download anySIM 1.2u . I found anySIM 1.1 on the installer but it is not working ... please help !!!
  • Joshua
    Hey Brad...
I was still wondering, my youtube won't work. I went through the process all right, it still doesn't work.
  • junaid malik
hi sir i am stuck on the last step. when i run the jail break it says that my iphone is not connected restart the computer and try again i have but still the same problem plz would you care to help me on this situtation it would be help full. thankssssssss
  • Bigs: Either keep using your TurboSIM, or revirginize as I've said.
  • Hello Brad, I could not get the sim unlock application working on 1.1.1. Not sure why, I tried many times following the guide without deviation. I have though managed to jailbreak 1.1.2 thx to this guide, and with Turbo SIM, abile to use non AT&T carriers.

    Many thx Brad

    Bigley
  • Matt: If you followed the guide, you would be unlocked, and the pages on page two would work fine. I can't help you if you don't follow the guide.
  • Matt
Hey Brad...hats off to u!!i read ur procedure n followed it up on my iphone(1.1.2).i was able to jailbreak it..can use the ipod and camera now.But still not able to unlock it to use my carrier(vodafone) in India. Is there a software(other than turbosim or safesim) way out?iv tried ur procedure on page 2..but get stuck at putty..it doesnt accept any password when i use putty..require big big help from u!thank you
  • Bigs: Read the guide

Muneer: Follow the whole guide, it will work. If it doesn't you may have to virginize your baseband first.
  • Muneer
    Hey there,
I read ur guide and followed every step in it, but it didn't work for me.
to be more precisly, i was able to jailbreak 1.1.2, but not to unlock it. Every time i use anysim 1.2.1 u, my iphone crashes. I also read another forums, but I still got the same problem. so if u have faced this one before would u please tell me how to solve this problem. I'm on 1.1.1 again and my only problem is how to unlock 1.1.2. thanks very much for ur help.
  • Hello, please help

I attempted to "restore" the iphone to 1.1.1 firmware I downloaded off your website, and everything goes well, and firmware updates, until it gets to the end of verification of software and then it give error message the iphone could not be restored, and threre sia picture if itunes icon on iphone and usb cable. What do I do now?

    please help
  • joshua
Brad you really are a hero to us all!
I just wanted to thank you for your time and tutorial! And ask you one last question... My youtube doesn't work... Any way to fix that?

P.s. I am writing this from my unlocked iPhone!!! Yes!!!
  • Thx Brad,

so for 1.0.2 base firmware upgrade to 1.1.2 with turbo sim, just to confirm I got it right, I do step 1 but instead on using firmware 1.1.2, I use 1.1.1. Afterward I jump straight to step 5 and continue there?

Do i need to activate anything after restoring to 1.1.1 found in steps 3 and 4?

    Many thanks

    bigley Ling
  • Bigs: Follow the instructions in step 1 of the guide, but use the 1.1.1 firmware file instead.
  • Hi Brad, thx for your quick reply :)

When you say upgrade from 1.0.2 to 1.1.1, do you mean using itunes (windows in my case) to restore "iphone1,1_1.1.1_3A109a_restore.ipsq" or update?

Also is it worth while me using the Turbo SIM still or mod the iphone to run without it if possible?

    Thanks

    Bigley Ling
  • Ali: If you unlocked your phone, you will have to virginize first, otherwise just follow the guide.

Manish: Contact them, I'm not going to give you support for something I have nothing to do with.
  • Manish
    Hi Brad,
Thanks for your help today. I've run into another issue. I bought sim freer (http://www.iphonesimfreer.com/index.html) since I didn't know about your site till today. I'm able to connect to a mobile network using a foreign sim card. The issue is that when I use the keypad to punch in a phone number, as soon as I press the first number, it bring the phone to the Home screen. I cant dial out, however if I add a name in the Contacts, and from there I choose to dial, then it dials out. Would you have any suggestions, thanks.
  • Ali
    Hi Brad,

Is there a way where I can directly upgrade my iphone to 1.1.2 thru iTunes n then unlock it ? Coz I am currently running 1.0.2 and am lost with the instructions given here. Please let me know what is the nxt step or in short how to upgrade it to 1.1.1. Thanks in advance.

    Regards,
    Ali
  • Manish
    It worked, thanks again.
  • Manish
    Thanks! Trying it now.
  • I have further updated the guide to make it clearer.
  • Manish
    Hi Brad,
I'm stuck in the same situation Joshua is. Top of your guide states that in Step 5 we should be able to "upgrade" to 1.1.2. However in iTunes the option is to upgrade to 1.1.3. I could not find in your guide how to choose to upgrade to 1.1.2 instead of 1.1.3 unless I missed something. Would appreciate your clarification.

    Thanks,
    Manish
  • Joshua: Read the top of the guide, it has been updated. Your phone will be useless until you jailbreak/activate it.
  • Joshua
    Sorry to double post! Really!

Question: Will the phone work/be activated an be able to make calls before the jailbreak?
  • Joshua
    Brad!

You really have been so much help! One last question... I'm scared to death of pressing the "update" button, because I need to update to 1.1.2... but itunes says update to 1.1.3!

Is there a way to "update" to 1.1.2... now that the "update" button refers to 1.1.3?
  • Bigs: Upgrade to 1.1.1, install and run OktoPrep, then do a jailbroken upgrade as in step 5.
  • Hello Brad, your guide sounds excellent.

But was wondering how I would upgrade my iPhone which has firmware 1.0.2 I believe to be already jail broken as it lets me run 3rd party applications, but I suspect the phone is not unlocked from At & t as I have a "Turbo SIM" installed on top of my exsiting SIM card. This is the setup of the iPhone when I got it.

The real question is, with Turbo SIM, is there any more precautions I need to take when updating to 1.1.2? I am scared of making the GSM part unusable as I live in New Zealand, hence using a foreign SIM card.

    Thanks in advance

    Bigley Ling
  • Eddie: I am going to delete any more comments that ask this question, but because you asked so nicely, I'll answer you again: virginize your baseband, then start the guide. Virginizing details are in the comments.
  • Eddie
    Hey brad,

i read your article, it's great. i will be trying it out later at home. just a quick question before i start anything.

i have an unlocked phone in the US and i'm using t-mobile with it. i have never performed an upgrade so i'm still at 1.0.2 and baseband 03.14.08_G. i just didn't want to risk bricking the phone.

question is, can i just start with your instructions from the beginning and will everything work? or do i need to upgrade first to 1.1.1 firmware beforehand and then start with your instructions?

i guess if it's necessary for me to get to 1.1.1 firmware, can i get a guide to do that?

    thanks for your help!
  • Luiz: Yes, I will try and put together a guide for 1.1.3, but there are technical challenges to get around first. It has only been out a day, relax.
  • Luiz
Hello Brad, are you going to be able to help us upgrade our unlocked iPhones to firmware 1.1.3 ? Thank you
  • Joshua: Upgrading with a phone unlocked with an early version of anySIM causes it.
  • Joshua
    Brad,
Thanks for your quick reply... do you know what causes the phone to not know its own IMEI?
  • Joshua: It is mainly for if you have EVER unlocked with anySIM less than 1.1.2u, not just the latest attempt. There is no harm in trying it. You can have your SIM out the entire time, there is no need for it to be in.
  • Joshua
    Brad!

I have really appreciated all your help with everyone else, its given me hope that my iPhone isn't lost forever. I read through your script 2 or 3 times before beginning to make sure I didn't miss anything. I used the anySIM 1.2.u just as you suggested. Like Josh (dec 12), it all went very smoothly and nicely until the anySIM program said "cannot unlock this iphone".

Now my IMEI is NOT showing in the "about" section, so I assumed thought it might be problem that could be solved by "revirginizing" the phone... however, code.google.com/p/iphone-elite/wiki/RevirginizingTool says that if you used anySIM 1.1x or higher then the revirginizing tool shouldn't be needed. My IMEI does NOT say "0049" it just plain doesn't exist.

    I have 2 questions...
do i ignore that message at the beginning and go ahead and viginize my iphone?

when do i take out the sim... as you mentioned in the posts but not in the tutorial?
  • GmillerE: Revirginize (check the comments), then start the guide.

Manuel: Yes, you can downgrade 1.1.2 to 1.0.2, but your baseband firmware will stay at the later version. You can unlock both firmware 1.1.2 and 1.1.1, but not iPhone that came with firmware 1.1.2 out of the box.
  • Manuel
    Hi,

Thanks for the great article. I just wanted to know if its possible to downgrade from 1.1.2 to 1.0.2. Oh and if its possible to unlock the phone with firmware 1.1.2 and 1.1.1

    Thanks
  • GmillerE
Hello Brad I have 1.0.2 and wanted to upgrade to 1.1.2 When I frist bought my phone it had 1.1.1 firmware but i had to downgrade to unlock it. How do I keep my unlock status and upgrade to 1.1.2?
  • Jamie: You should attempt a restore of firmware 1.1.1 and see if that helps. If it doesn't try doing a DFU restore by following the instructions in step 2 of the guide. If it still doesn't work, you will have to make a warranty call. This happened to Peter in the comments above, seems to be an issue with the iPhone's touchscreens.
  • Jamie
Brad, I am in Australia. I am running 1.1.1 which was jailbroken by a friend. I recently installed through a free WiFi network some themes, games and other stuff which all worked fine for a few weeks. On the weekend my phone simply froze up where the normal lock screen came up but the slide didnt work, ie touching the screen didnt register. I have rebooted and when the pin code page comes up still nothing, I touch the numbers but it does nothing. I Synch'd the phone with iTunes and it seemed like normal but the touch still registers nothing. I dont currently have access to a WiFi but can if needed, but have internet at home. Can I fix this easily, or do I need to restore/upgrade etc as per your instructions? Help
  • Josh
sorry double message, ok I got it to work firmware 1.1.2 and have installer.app fully working!!!! thanks to your how to and my searching and the website I found. A MAN! YOU ROCK!!!
  • Josh
OK!!! So I found a great website with a VERY easy read'up on how to virginize, http://iphone.unlock.no/#Bypass-Activation-and-Jailbreak
there is a link on the left side that says how to virginize. it tells you how, and it tells you other tips too.
  • Josh
Ok I will try and use the virginize program. I was also wondering I noticed in some of the posts that you were saying to NOT have the sim card in while unlocking. In what part should you NOT have the sim card in?!? I was just wondering because in your how to, it never stated anything about removing the sim card.
  • Peter: There should be a link to manage your comment subscriptions in the email that gets sent out, but I've removed your subscription for this post for you anyway.
  • Peter Pratelli
    Hi Brad,

I left comments on your sight a few months ago now and at the time you were very helpful to me but I was wondering if there is any way of being removed from the mailing list, I am recieving sometimes 10 emails a day and its filling up my mail box. Thank you for your help.

    Yours affably

    Peter Pratelli
  • Josh: Unfortunately, it sounds like you need to virginize your baseband. See the links in comments above.
  • Josh
Brad, hey first of all, thank you for taking the time to even write a how to for us. But I am having a problem. I am on the VERY last step(using anysim) but when I use it, it tells me that it cannot unlock my phone. And that I need to retstart my phone. And I cannot download the last program in tweaks1.1.1 I cannot detect wifi nor will edge work. What am I doing wrong?
  • Vik
Absolutely fantastic Brad, cant thank you enough for your guidance with this process. SO thankful to you for your patience with me and feel so nice to have activated the iphone. Dream come true for me.

    Your ardent fan.

    Vik
  • Vik
Oh boy!! this is facinating... I will let you know when its done. thanks for your patience mate.
  • Vik: Start again and do it.
  • Vik
thanks that worked well but also created one more problem. Since you said ignore the anysim part I did not bother to use the oktoprep thing as it appeared to be a part of that process. Now when I am trying to jailbreak, it says it cant be done as I have to use oktoprep before. So sorry Brad.. can you please help with this, I am pretty sure this is the last thing I need help with.

    Thanks again
  • Vik: As I've answered many times, you need to download and reinstall the Java Runtime Environment from http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/?intcmp=1281
  • Vik
Brad I did exactly the way it was mentioned and it has updated to the new software 1.1.2 but after the reboot it came back to the normal screen which shows the charging and the music icon, at the bottom it says slide for emergency call.. just as before.

When I am double clicking on the batch file it just vanishes in a flash and nothing happens..
  • Vik: What? Just follow the instructions. The activate and emergency call screens are the same thing.
  • Vik
Thanks Brad, that worked fine... however when I updated the firmware to 1.1.2, it did not come back to the activate screen rather restarted and returned to the emergency call screen. Am I back to squre 1 ? or is there a way around this.... sorry please advise
  • Vik: Go to the all packages category and find it there.
  • Vik
Thanks Brad, I am now in the Network category but there is no OpenSSH tab there, it has a OpenLLDP tab though. Is that the same. Please advise.

    Thanks
  • Vik: Just start the whole of step 3 (Activate firmware 1.1.1, install Installer.app) again, it can be a bit tricky at times. Try it with the phone plugged into your computer and iTunes open.
  • Vik
Brad, thanks a bunch mate, I am sorry I am a bit nervous. I am almost through the jailbreaking process but stuck at step 8. It all worked fine but the phone did not restart automatically hence I did a manual retart. But it again came back to the activate screen. I tried to follow the instructions from step 7 but now dialing the 0 does not ring it back. It says call failed....

Can you please help mate.. once again sorry for the bother.

    Thanks a bunch
  • Vik: Why would I write the instructions if you didn't need to actually follow them? As I said, just ignore the steps about anySIM.
  • Vik
Brad, thanks. Do I need to really downgrade and follow all the steps or should I just follow last step on this page to Jailbreak.

Please advise urgently. Sorry for all the trouble.

    Thanks
  • Vik: Give this page on Apple Support a look: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307007
  • Vik
    Brad,

When I am trying to follow the instructions, I am getting an unknown error 1604 instead of 1015. Not sure what's wrong. Can you please help as I am trying to jailbreak this 1.1.2 iphone OTB.

Thanks - I am online now
  • Vik: Read the guide, it tells you how to activate and jailbreak, you don't need an AT&T; SIM. Just ignore the stuff about anySIM.
  • Vik
Thanks Brad, I will try to jailbreak and activate my phone and will keep an eye here for your next guide to unlock the 1.1.2 OTBs. At the moment, I am stuck at the first step, not able to get in the phone, guess will need to get a AT&T simcard and do a switch accounts to activate the phone.

Once again, thanks a bunch for your suggestions, they are really helpful. Keep up the great work you do for the "i" community.
  • Vik: There will never be any unlock codes available for any iPhones, but an unlock hack will eventually be available for 1.1.2 OTB iPhones. There really is no harm in jailbreaking and activating your phone in the mean time - should an unlock be made available, you can still do it then.
  • Vik
Thanks so much for the quick response Brad, this helps.

Do you recommmend downgrading and jailbreaking to use the other features or should we all with the 1.1.2 wait for the unlock codes to be available... ?

    Thanks again !

    Vik
  • Vik: You can't unlock a 1.1.2 OTB iPhone yet, downgrading the firmware doesn't help. You can follow the instructions in this guide to downgrade, jailbreak, then re-upgrade your phone though, leaving you with an activated and jailbroken iPhone, you just won't be able to make calls/send SMS messages.
  • Vik
    Hi Brad,

I just bought a iPhone with 1.1.2 preloaded, I am sure there is no way to unlock/hack it as of now (hoping there is soon). Was wondering if there's still anyway to get the firmware rollback to 1.1.1 and then unlock it somehow..not sure if my question is valid or not.

Secondly, if that's not possible, then is there anyway to atleast access and use all the features of the phone.

    Thanks for your help.

    Vik
  • Thanks for the nice feedback guys, glad it worked for you!
  • John
Thanks for the instructions. Mine didn't act exactly like you said, but between you and other, I got it done. Thanks
  • Thierry Poitras
Thanks for this incredible and complete guide.
It is the best I've seen on the Web (and I've seen and tested a lot).
  • Sean Riley
Brad: Hey i tried again and it finally worked. Thanks alot man, this shit dope!
  • sean rileu
Brad: I followed all of your steps, and up to step three I was successful. But for some reason when I download the installer.app it doesn't work. My phone still stays in the same mode it was in with the side for emergency bar. I retired it several times but it does not work. I was reading other peoples post and your response to theirs, and I saw a comment you made by saying if it came with 1.1.2 out of the box it would not work. I got my phone for xmass, but my mother bought it two weeks before I received it. How would I know if it came with 1.1.2?
  • Peter: Yeah, people can suck. That would be your problem. If it was a firmware issue with the screen, the steps so far would have fixed it. Looks like you have a hardware problem. If you want to do a warranty call, restore the phone to 1.1.2 and they won't know that you've tried to hack it.
  • yeah, its animated.. actually, the guy who's phone it is just told me the screen hasnt been responsive for weeks.. "is that important?"

    i hate people.
  • Peter: That is very strange indeed. Make sure that you are touching it with bare skin, no gloves or a stylus or anything. If it still doesn't work, then it probably is a hardware issue. Is the slide for emergency bar animated?
  • hmmm...

maybe the phone's touch screen is buggered then.. its up, but the slide for emergency isnt working..
  • Peter: You need to read the instructions better ;) Just ignore it, we just use Independence to kick the phone out of DFU mode. You run it with the phone connected, give it a few minutes, and your phone should restart to the activation screen. You don't have to click anything in Independence.
  • damn iNdependence is coming up with an error..

you need to downgrade to version 1.0.2 then perform the special upgrade.. :(
  • Peter: So the upgrade to 1.1.2 worked? Then you're fine! Head on to step 2, it is supposed to not be activated. Don't worry about putting a SIM in.
  • hi brad...

i had iPhone firmware 1.0.2 i tried to upgrade to 1.1.2 (step one) but got an error message 1603.. i googled and saw fairly unhelpful guides telling me to restart the computer and try and. i did that, same error message.. then removed the sim, this time the error message was 1604.

i tried in another user, no joy. oh.. hang on. a new computer worked, but i'm getting the message telling me to put an 'unlocked and valid sim in the phone...

    i'm scared :)
  • tony mallard
    hi brad

im sooo sorry for somone smart ass like me i should have followed ur instruction from the get go.

i thank u and by the way after i upgraded my phone unlocked .

so whos the genius? with no doubt its you my friend.

sorry again and thank you so much.

    tony
  • John
I know your getting hammered with questions, and maybe mine was answered somewhere. I got as far as running independence after restoring to 1.1.1. A feat as far as I'm concerned. Where it says in your instructions to slide the emergency slider, I just see the home screen.

I am not activated to any network, because I can't call, but I can get to the apps.

Where do I go from there.
  • mohamed: You need to revirginize, see the comments above for details.
  • mohamed
i have iphone and i unlocked but for sime reason i have the massage incorect sim.and itunes logo with the wire logo now i have 1.1.2 and the imei # has change to 00499xxx. please help me to let me use the phone
  • tommy: You will have to find help for that elsewhere, I didn't write the virginizer and I don't have time to guide you though it. Read Bryan's comment above, he has some useful tips.
  • tommy
    hey brad,

im trying to verginizer my phone, just befor i do any sim.. i have downloaded the the ziped file and then put the verginator file into the verginizer pack.. then next steps im not to sure about...
4)Copy the "virginizer_pack" directory to your iPhone.

    (1. where do i copy the pack to, what folder in the iphone ??)
    (2. is it alright to winSCP to do this?)

    5) Use MobileTerminal or SSH to change to the "virginizer_pack" directory.
    (3. not to sure what is ment by this?)

    6) Give "virginator.sh" permission to execute:

it would be much a appeciated for a little easer instructions as im am a little slow with this stuff!!!!

    thanks brad..
  • Great to hear Bryan! I've not used the tools from iunlock, I prefer to do everything manually so I know exactly what's going on, but its great to hear your sucess. Upgrading from 1.0.2 is always an issue, as the early unlock tools were quite primitive.
  • Bryan
    Hi Brad,

yiiipppeeee, the iphone 1.0.2 is upgraded to 1.1.2(04.02.13_G) jailbroken and unlocked.

    What I did wrong :
    1) I did not virginize the 1.0.2(03.14.08_G) unlocked iphone before doing the 1.1.2(04.02.13_G) upgrade.
    2) after downgrading to 1.1.1(04.02.13_G) it showed the "incorrect SIM" error
(I realized at this point that I need to virginize the phone.)

What I tried and did not work for me :
    1) I thought that I needed to downgrade all the way to 1.0.2 (actually this is not needed)
    2) used the above iphone-elite Revirginization Tool to try to revirginize the phone. I have all the correct permission to the file system and somehow the automated script did not work for me after a good 3-4 hours.

What worked for me : (Its fully automated and a lot easier)
(Remember at this point I am at 1.1.1(04.02.13_G)
    1. I used the baseband downgrade from http://i.unlock.no (I used the process under How do i downgrade a 1.1.2 phone.

    After this , I have a iPhone1.1.1(03.14.08_G)

    2. To play really safe, I also did the following I also did the revirginization process using : How to "Virginize" if you already upgraded and have 04.01.13_G.

After this, I still have a iPhone1.1.1(03.14.08_G). not the "incorrect SIM" error message no longer exist. The phone is ready for a proper upgrade.

From this point onwards, I just followed your GREAT!!!!!!! guide to upgrade phone to 1.1.2 and the rest is history.

I have to thank you for putting this guide together as it helped my a lot. Thanks for your time to help me get it working.

Note to other users : Sometimes, the jailbreakme.com part may hang. which is what happened to me. I have encountered times where you cannot get to jailbreakme.com. Good thing I have 2 ISP and when I switch to the other ISP. it worked perfectly. (So, you should be able to get installer done. Just be patient)

btw, I live in asia and I need to get the caller ID to recognize the number correctly, I did that. http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=7736&page=23

I also modified the MeCCA framework to include customized ringtone.
    http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=15806

    Thanks Brad!!!
  • Tony: Ah, here I was thinking you were following the guide. Sorry, I'm not going to help you if you haven't. Please don't clutter up the comments if you aren't following the guide.
  • tony mallard
    hey brad

even though i didnt upgrade to 1.1.2 i can still do the second page?or do i have to upgrade? i have the 1.1.1 now

    thank you
  • Tony: The iPhone doesn't support Suncom out of the box, you need to go to page two and complete steps 8 to 13. You should then get service, you don't have to complete any of the steps on page one again, as they appear to have worked.
  • tony mallard
hi brad thanx for your reply,i live in NC and unless i need to go to the second page the network im in is called suncom.
so unless u think its better to repeat the steps and from what part?

sorry to bother u again .

    thanx
    tony
  • Bryan: I've used the iphone-elite code to virginize several 1.1.1 iPhone, it does work, but it's great you got it working. What method did you use?

Tony: What country are you using the phone in? Sounds like you need to complete the instructions on the second page, especially the steps with creating a .plist for your carrier.
  • tony mallard
ok brad after messing with it i have a no service on there, but whats puzzling me is i have still the voicemail notification.

and i tried to unlock it again and it tells me now cannot unlock phone and it doesnt alert anything about the sim if its inncorrect?

    where did i go wrong?

    thank you
  • tony mallard
hi brad, well i have no sim error and i went to application and checked the x box other wise if im missing somthing in the setup ? well it does say i have voicemail which i do but it doesnt kick to the network im in is there somthing i have to repeat? and if i do please brad let me know.

    thank you
  • Bryan
    Hi Brad,

I got it working. Upgrade successfully done. I found a better way to virginizing the phone . the google site that you mention is only for 1.0.2 fw. if at 1.1.1 it did not work for me. I found a way to virginize the phone with fw1.1.1 and baseband04.02.13_G. Your upgrade process after that is superb. Thanks :)
  • Bryan: I have no idea what you mean by the igoogle process, and I've never virginized using the package in Installer. I have given instructions several times in the comments, follow them. I don't have the time to step you through baseband issues, but virginizing should solve the problem.
  • Bryan
I am falling into problems with the igoogle virginizier process. I got stuck at creating "seczone.backup" it just frooze at waiting for data...

When I rebooted the phone, I found that it had the file which is 8kb.

then I proceed to start iUnlock process and it gave a operation timed out and connection was closed.

    Help.
  • Bryan
    Hi Brad,

I managed to install appsnap. however, I do not see the virginize package in appsnap. Appreciate your advice to virginize it back. Do I need to downgrade the baseband? Thank a million.
  • Bryan: Get jailbreakme.com working (its trial and error, it has been suggested that having the phone connected to the PC and iTunes running at the time can help), then reviginize. You should be fine.
  • Bryan
    Hi,

I had a 1.0.2 unlocked iphone. I did this process as in upgrading to 1.1.2 without re-virginizing the phone. how I am downgraded to firmware 1.1.1 and baseband is in 04.02.13_G and I cannot install appsnap. I also get the "incorrect SIM insert an unlocked and valid sim to activate iphone"

    Please help.
  • Tony: How does it show you have voicemail? When you say that it can't go to the network, do you mean that it doesn't have service, or presents you with a SIM error?
  • tony mallard
hello i unlocked the phone but it wont go to the network it would show i have voicemail but it wont dail or have a bar its just flat, what is the problem ?
  • Tommy: Start the guide again, but while you are on firmware 1.1.1, revirginize your baseband as described in previous comments, then continue with the guide.
  • tommy
sorry brad for being vague about the above comments

the phone when i restart and put a my sim in comes up with the incorrect Sim ( this iphone mut be used with an approved SIM) message

i have tired to use differnt sims aswell.
  • Tommy: If your phone and SMS app don't crash, and the phone doesn't complain about an incorrect SIM or the like, then it isn't a problem with the steps in this guide and I can't help you.
  • Tommy
not getting a signal when put my im into the phone after restarting it thats what no such luck ment
  • @Tommy: No, there is not supposed to be two files, you should just save the same file. You are pretty vague by saying 'no such luck,' what exactly doesn't work?
  • Tommy
hey brad just finshed all the steps, and no such luck for attempt 1... just wondering befor i restore and try again.. any things i should check that might of gorn wrong...

one thing i think it might be is when i rewrote some of the codes in ultra-edit in step 5, i found there where two files called, app support and appsupport.bat... so i thought when i saved it didnt replace the file but made a new one.. i deleted one and then transfered it to my phone..
was there aspose to be the two files???

    thank you
  • Tommy: I'm guessing this is for the second page? You should re-read the instructions in step 11, sounds like you are putting the wrong server name in. Read the PuTTY instructions, not the Mac ones.
  • Tommy
    hey brad

so close, trying to ssh my phone, when i am using putty, im putting in my ip after ssh root @ .,.... and then when i type my pass work im am getting denied, tnot to sure why, using the pass work alpine?????

    thanks brad
  • tommy
    hey brad.

i think io found the way to get app snaps to properly do its job... i read some forums and most people were saying to keep itunes open when doing it... so tired it and it worked.. just letting you know if any one ask's you about it again.,..
  • tony: More than likely you don’t have the correct version of Java JRE installed. You don’t have to start again. Download and install the Java Runtime Environment from http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/?intcmp=1281
  • tony mallard
    hi brad
thanx for all your work i think its great, i had a problem when i upgraded when i click the windows.bat ill get a flash black window and its gone what did i miss when i upgraded?

    thanks alot
  • Tommy: Auto lock is the power saving feature. Make sure you also have Password Lock turned off.

Rajshekar: It is actually the other way around: you can activate and jailbreak a 1.1.2 OTB iPhone, but you can't unlock it. Just follow the instructions in the guide, but ignore the unlocking steps.

Riffel: Just give it another go, you must have missed something. As long as you don't have an iPhone that came with version 1.1.2 out of the box, the above steps work.
  • Riffel
i use the method like your write, but when i put my SIM (Telecel Mexico), the Iphone said the same shhh...... "need an aproved SIM".

    PLEASE HELP ME!!.

    I use all the method
  • Rajshekar Reddy
dude i recently bought an iphone from US and its an 1.1.2 version...so plz help me in using the phone or atleast the itunes(music, photos etc) n lemme say one thing m very new to this unlock and activation but one thing i understood is activation of 1.1.2 is impossible as of now but atleast unlock is possible right?..so plz help me in unlocking the phone and tell me whether it leads to any serious prob, like it cant be activated never again...if that is the case ill wait for the perfect solution....so plz help me
  • tommy
i have taken auto lock to never, already done that, when the iphone just sits on the activate screen a black screen comes up after about 30 seconds.. i this stand by ( power saving)
  • Tommy: Yes, auto lock matters, step 3.6
  • tommy
does it mater if stand by is on or off, if it does how do you turn standby off?
  • Tommy: There is no trick to it. Just restore firmware 1.1.1 and try it again. Some iPhones it will work on right away, some it can take several tries.
  • Tommy
    hey brad, having GREAT DAy!!!!

got near the end then relised a forgot a step of two so tryed to go back but just ended up in a big mess, so i restarted my pone and tryed to start over, now im back at step 3 part 8 having the same problem as this morning comment, its driving mer insane knowing i have done it once but cant get it to work again... any ideas???? last time was rely random how it worked (appsnaps)

    thank you
  • Tommy
hey brad having a great day....!

i nearly finshed all the steps then relised i didnt print out a couple of the steps, got rely confused and then i decided to restore the phone and start again.. now i cant get the phone to do step step 3 part 8 again. trying all sorts of ways and nothing seems to work.. so any ideas??? my last comment this morning was about it , then i got it to work.. thought i could do it again but its not working for me.
  • Tommy
Brad fixed the last problem, when it went to activation screen i puched the off button till the slide to turn off came up, left it on that screen waited five mins and then restarted it manually, then it came up to the normal screen..
  • Tommy
    Hey brad,

having some trouble with appsnaps, at step 3 part 8, i’m experiencing a problem. it seems that after installing appsnap, my phone will go directly to the activate screen. then the phone will black out (standby mode) auto lock is on never. Will stndby up set the download when back in activate screen. i have read every body comment about this happening to them, i started from step one again and the same thing happens, waitied 10 mins some times befor restartin manually.

    very simmilar problem as

    ha

(do you know how they got it to work)???

  • Richard: You're going to have to get your terms right before I can help you, what you posted doesn't make any sense. AppSnapp is the service on jailbreakme.com, you don't use it to install applications.

Roy: No, your phone isn't bricked. Just restore to firmware 1.1.1 and keep trying. Make sure you turn auto lock off, and leave the phone for at least 5mins when it returns to the activation screen, it should reset itself.
  • MONCHY
hi, JUST FOR INFORMATION, MY IPHONE IS 5 DAYS OLD, VERSION USA,
    WITH 1.1.2.
I GET NEX SIM AND AFTER
Downgrade firmware from 1.1.2 to 1.1.1
Jailbreak & Activate, insatll OKTOPREP then upgrade back to 1.1.2
cut the little corner of your own sim card
tape your sim card on next sim by using double side tape.
AND NOW I USED T-MOVIL SIM WITH NO PROBLEM.
  • Roy
I think my phone just bricked through this...
I updated the phone through itunes...I was using 1.0.2 unlocked, upgraded to 1.1.1 last night and was working fine
then I updated through itunes to 1.1.2 and did the reset to get the phone in restore mode and downgraded to 1.1.1
I did all the above until I had to install jailbreak
it doesn't seem to be working...I install it...and nothing happens, it takes me back the "Activate iPhone" screen and then nothing happens
I reset my phone and tried again...no dice!
    is my phone bricked...?
    I can't get to step 4!!!!
    I NEED MY PHONE
  • Richard
Hi. My Iphone 1.1.1 ORG was updated to 1.1.2 then back and hacked then updated to 1.1.2 again. After I had it working and all apps installed it started acting funny. I would try to install more apps via appsnapp and it would just crash appsnapp and go to the home screen. I restored it to 1.1.1 and tried to jailbreak it again but after I would jailbreak 1.1.1 it would not activate. I could unlock the phone but I had no phone service in 1.1.1. When I update that to 1.1.2 appsnapp would go away and I cant really do anything from there. I did install octoprep BTW.
  • Tommy
crag, it was the pc, worked fine on another.. thanks
  • JM: Google is your friend to find all about Stelth SIM and the like, and yes, one will enable your phone to work.

Tommy: Give it a go on another computer, there are too many things that could cause that. It would be easier to narrow it down to see if it is the phone or the PC that is causing it.

dave: Great to hear! Thanks for the kind words.
  • dave todd
BRAD, my hat comes off to you , all sorted and working fine thanks to you , Great tutorial and thanks again for your patience, where would we be without people like you ? regards Dave
  • Tommy
    Brad

the fail message reads: "sending to iphone failed"
    im using windows.
  • JM
My family bought an iphone at Christmas time from the US to use in Italy and so I am assuming it is 1.1.2 and not 1.1.1. After doing some research, and if I understood correctly what I read, it seems that it is not currently possible to unlock the iphone that uses 1.1.2.

My questions are what is a stealthsim, will a stealthsim enable the iphone to work, and if so, does it allow one to keep the apple guarantee?

    Thank you very much!
  • Tommy: What message does it give you when it fails?

dave: More than likely you don't have the correct version of Java JRE installed. You don't have to start again. Download and install the Java Runtime Environment from http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/?intcmp=1281

Haben: The above instructions will give you a full SIM unlock until the next firmware revision. You should be able to use a public WiFi network for downloading and installing software through Installer and using the jailbreakme.com website without a problem.
  • Haben
I love how simple the instructions are, too bad the full unlock hasn't been discovered yet. I am currently downloading all the necessary components.I have one big dilemna though. I don't have high speed internet or a wifi connection. So can I do the first couple of steps at my house with and then go to a public library (i think they have wifi?) and add a wifi network there? And then come back home and finish the rest of the steps there? Tell me what you think. Also tell me what steps i should make sure i complete at the library before i come back to my house and finish the rest. Also remember you can't download files at a public library. Thanks and hope you can reply asap!
    Sincerely,
    Haben

Hi Brad, finally got through the point where i was getting stuck like craig (probably due to re naming the restore file )and got right to section 5 with no great problems , everything seemed to work just fine , however when i did the upgrade ( which also seemed to go with no problems )and clicked on windows.bat, i just got a quick flash of the command prompt black scren and nothing more !!instruction 5.3 says check the install ssh box ? where is the said box ? going to start the whole process again later today, should i have a sim in the phone or not as i have had one in for all previous attempts ? my other question is if i stopped after 4.8 would the phone be unlocked to any sim card and working albeit on firmware 1.1.1 because i think i would be more than happy with that ? what would i be missing by not using 1.1.2 ? i know thats a lot of questions but hopefully this will be my final post , thanks again Brad , Dave
  • Tommy
    BRAD,

when i run app installer, to bring it back to the activation screen, it fails but does not bring me to the activation screen on the iphone.

my serial number 4 and 5th number is 29.

    thank you
  • Craig: You are actually doing the virginizing on the iPhone, so the instructions should stand, just instead of using SSH from the Terminal, you want to use a program called PuTTY. Make sure you are using the simple pack from that page, not trying to run all the commands manually. If you get really stuck, use the contact page to shoot me an email and we'll get it sorted out.
  • Craig Davidson
Bloody hell Brad lol. I've downloaded the files to virginize but I'm getting lost trying to understand how to do it, do you know if there is an idiots guide. I've saw a couple but they seem to be for using a Mac. I'm starting get a bit pee'ed off.
  • Craig: "Incorrect SIM" means that at some point in time your baseband has been corrupted, and more than likely your phone doesn't know its IMEI. The most common cause of this is that you had your SIM card in when you did the unlock, which can occasionally create problems. You will need to downgrade back to 1.1.1, activate, then revirgnize your baseband (look through the comments for instructions), and redo the unlock WITHOUT a SIM card inserted. After that, you can run OktoPrep and upgrade to 1.1.2 again.
  • Craig Davidson
Ok Brad, got to Upgrade to firmware 1.1.2 and jailbreak and the black windows command screen came up went through all its work and at the end it said rebooting device came up, it did reboot a couple of time but its still saying Incorrect SIM this iphone must be used with an approved SIM, also the black windows command screen remained on the PC saying rebooting device, is this correct. The home menu is accessable with the Installer button and a SSH button, although I dont understand what the SSH does. So I still can't us my SIM.
  • karim: Seriously, read the damn comments. You can jailbreak, but you can't unlock.

Craig: Excellent news, you're almost there.
  • Craig Davidson
Scratch that one Brad found the openSSH
  • Craig Davidson
Hi Brad, I changed the restore file to .IPSW and tried again and this time the installer app has worked I've installed the BSD subsystem but the openSSH is not in the network category for me to install
  • karim
Hey Brad. Hope ur doing fine. I was able to downgrade my iPhone OTB 112 to 111and to frimware 04.02 is there any solution to unlock the sim now. Thanks a lot really
  • Craig/David: As I said, restore 1.1.1 and try again, and try it on a different internet connection. Other than that, I can't really help you, you will have to contact the AppSnapp guys. I didn't make it, and it has always worked for me.
  • Craig Davidson
Hi Brad. Ive checked the version in the General/About menu in the iphone and it is saying version1.1.1 (3A109a) and I can access http://jailbreakme.com but appsnap just seems not to install on the phone
  • Craig Davidson
Sorry Brad, I accidentily upgraded to firmware 1.1.2
  • dave todd
Ok Brad thanks , here goes again
  • dave: Use the guide instructions to access the WiFi menu, then press the back arrow and go to General > About on the settings screen, it is under Version.
  • dave todd
Hi again brad, how do i check the firmware version at the point you say above ? ( i will get there eventually )
  • dave: If you followed the instructions, you will be running 1.1.1 on your iPhone for this process, one of the steps is downgrading. You don't need to extract the zip file, and if it has a .zip extension, you need to rename it to .ipsw before doing the downgrade. It wouldn't have worked if you didn't. Try the downgrading steps again with the file named correctly, then check your firmware version.

You should be using AppTapp to kick the phone out of restore mode, that's all. AppSnapp is the tool on jailbreakme.com, and supports firmware 1.1.1.

rudolf: No, only the languages that are built into the firmware.

Craig: Why are you using AppTapp at all? If your phone is already jailbroken and unlocked, there is no need.
  • Craig Davidson
Hi Brad, I'm having the exact same problem as Dave Todd. Mine is a US iphone running 1.1.1 jailbroken and anysim. I'm using a UK Orange network sim as I threw out the AT&T sim that came with the phone will this be doing anything. When i run app tap it also only shows firmware up to 1.02 not 1.1.1 so does this not matter
  • rudolf
I have updated to 1.1.2 and unlocked using other procedures but the only languages that I see are French, German, Italy, Canada and US .

Can you get Spanish language and keyboard using this key procedure?
  • dave todd
By the way brad , do i need to unzip the firmware file? i did unzip it but when i browsed for the restore nothing would work apart from pointing it at the actual zip file ?
  • dave todd
Hi Brad , have definitely turned auto lock off each timr i tried the steps and keep getting same result , If I turn the phone back on now the wifi still shows as being connected at the activation screen , the only thing i havent done is renamed the restore file to .ispw but it seems to have worked anyway ,and when i run app tap it only shows firmware up tp 1.02 not 1.1.1 does it matter which one i use ? will this make any difference ? my own iphone works fine on my network too ? will the problem have anything to do with the phone being previously unlocked ? i know im clotching at straws now but im baffled , Dave
  • dave todd: If the screen went blank but the phone didn't restart, then it really does sound like you didn't turn auto lock off. I would double check that. Apart from that, have you tried it on a different internet connection? Even if you just give it a go on a public WiFi hot spot or something.

Rajshekar Reddy: The jailbreak steps above SHOULD work to jailbreak your OTB 1.1.2 iPhone. Just skip the unlock steps.
  • Rajshekar Reddy
dude as u said earlier "If you’re phone came out of the box with 1.1.2, then you can’t unlock just yet."....so can i expect an best cracking method?....if so plz help me....
  • dave todd
Hi again Brad , had another go and got to the same point again ,i.e got to jailbreak me tapped appsnapp , almost immediately returned to activate screen and screen went blank after a short while but iphone never restarted or even shut down i dont think ,after 15 mins pressed home button and screen came back on at "activate" , tried then to restart manually which again brought me to activate screen when i tried to retry from step 3.7 i got call failed.. p.s I had set the standby to never...any further suggestions ? Thanks again for your patience
  • d: As said in previous comments, it depends on how you unlocked in the first place.

david todd: Yes, downgrading the system firmware doesn't downgrade the modem firmware, your modem firmware version is fine. Jailbreakme.com is supposed to throw you back to the activation screen, that means it is doing it's thing. After 2-5mins your phone will restart automatically and you'll be set. Restore your phone's 1.1.1 firmware to get everything back to stock, then try again, but when it goes back to the activation screen, just leave it.

ricx4ny: Make sure you do step 4.7.
  • ricx4ny
    after copy anysim.app
    i see the icon...
but i can't slide to unlock.....
    i can't run anysim
    plz help~
  • dave todd
Hi Brad, have made a number of attempts to follow this tutorial but keep getting stuck at the jailbreakme point , i can get to install appsnapp but as soon as i tap it i just get thrown back to the activate screen and nothing happens after that , by sliding the slider to emergency calls i can dial *3001#12345#* and the version still shows as 04.02 13 g which i think may be incorrect , any idea what may be going wrong ? everything up to this point seems to be going ok , am i correct in thinking that reverting to 1.1.1 firmware doesnt change the modem version ? when you say the phone needs re virginizing do i already have to have the phone working at this point ?i have read the tutorial relating to the above modem version but there is just too much information now rushing round my head and confusion reigns ! i did mention in my first post that i was no expert ( but i am patient lol )slowly and simply please , Dave

    Hi,

I have a unlocked, jailbroken iPhone currently on firmware 1.0.2. How exactly do I get it firmware 1.1.1 before using the guide?
  • jagitch: There should be no reason that it can't recognize it as long as you have done the necessary OktoPrep steps in firmware 1.1.1. You can try and disable any firewall/antivirus software you are running on your PC, as that can interfere.
  • jagitch
Brad, iTunes recognizes the phone with no problem. I get to updating it with firmware 1.1.2. And then from there I try the window.bat file and then it errors out. I have made sure that the iTunes is closed but still the same results. I am really frustrated about this and any help is welcome. Thank you very much for your quick response.
  • Robin: Sorry, everyone is right
  • Robin
Hey I have a huge dilemna. My phone was bought 3 days prior to Christmas. Therefore I have the latest verion of the firmware and everyone has told me there isn't a way to unlock it. Could you let me know if it's possible and show me the steps to unlock? I would really appreciate it, thanks brotha!
    Sincerely,
    Robin
  • jagitch: Does iTunes recognize the phone?
  • jagitch
I did all the instructions again but I still can’t get pass instructions 5.3. I made sure that I did update and not restore. When I run windows.bat I still get an error:” Cannot connect to your device: Please plug your iPod/iPhone into your computer…” I have re-connected the iPhone and also rebooted my machine a couple of time but to no success. I have also made sure it has the most current version of JAVA was installed on the PC. I even went as far as using another machine to just run windows.bat for the iPhone but still the same error. I hope you or anybody there can assist me in this dilemma.
  • Marcus: Cheers! It's always nice to hear success stories.

Austin: It depends how you originally unlocked your phone. If you used AnySIM before version 1.1 or any other method (except for SimFree), you need to revirginize (details in a comment above) before you start the guide.

amart: Good that you solved it. That app does the same thing that TouchFree should have done for you.

dave todd: You will be able to upgrade with those phones. Before you start the guide, you will need to do a DFU restore as in step 2 of the guide (except that your bricked phone probably won't be recognized by iTunes, just continue with the steps). Once the phone is running firmware 1.1.1 (it will be locked), you need to revirginize the phone, then start the guide as normal.
  • dave todd
    Hi Brad,
just stumbled upon this page and i think you may be the god i need to pray to, we bought a number of unlocked iphones from Hong Kong recently which work fine here in the UK on any network, we were told at the time not to update them , unfortunately one nephew did just that on xmas day when he got his present , and it is now locked again, have tried following a couple of guides with no success, my own phone shows the version as 1.1.1 (3A109a) so i assume all the phones were same, and modem firmware shows as 04.01.13_G....I dont mind having a go at most things although i am by no means an expert..can you point me in the right direction as to exactly what i need to do to get this thing back to how it was....I am only a windows user so any info would need to be for that platform, Thanks in anticipation
  • amart
    Hey Brad,

thanks for the information and the quick reply, I used to use another web page as my source for iphone news and questions but the admin took a long time to respond so major kudos to you Brad! :) anyways I was able to fix my YOUTUBE i had to go to installer->press sources on the bottom->add source http://i.unlock.no->go back to apps on installer-> click on UNLOCKING TOOLS-> click on YOUTUBE FIX 1.1.1 and that was it but anyways thank you.........................!!!!!!!!!!

    ONE MORE THING....

If there is no software unlock yet as we speak, where can I buy a legit TurboSim? and about how much does it cost?
  • austin
Brad: I have a version 1.0.2 firmware iphone that i unlocked and jailbreaked using independence and I really want to update to 1.1.2 will your guide work for me? or is there something else i must do first to get to 1.1.1 before going to 1.1.2?

    thanks
    austin
  • Marcus
Hey Brad thanks for your instructions on how to upgrade and unlock to 1.1.2 they just worked fine for me .. very easy to follow .. Good work
  • mud: OTB means out of the box, which yours unfortunately was. You will not be able to unlock the device just yet.
  • mud
i have bought i phone from us on 31 nov with 8 gb. my friend has jailbreaked it and it is showing version 1.1.1 but modem firmware is 04.02 . i dont know is it 1.1.2 otb version or not and can your solution be used? is there any hope of getting solution in near future.
  • amart: I don't support using the guide on iPhones with 1.1.2 OTB.
  • amart
hey i have a quick question i bought a week 50 iphone obviously running OTB 1.1.2 i did the process but itunes wifi nor youtube works. iTunes says you must connect to a wifi network, and YOUTUBE says CANNOT CONNECT TO YOUTUBE. whats wrong. when I jailbroke the iphone with jailbreak.jar i clicked install SSH and when the iphone was successfully jailbroken, the SSH icon is on the SB. thanks admin i know you will be able to successfully be able to resolve this problem.
  • jagitch: In 5.1, are you sure you did an upgrade and not a restore? If you did a restore, you will have to start again from step 2. Also, make sure you close iTunes before trying to run windows.bat.
  • jagitch
Brad, Good evening. I have done your instructions and everything went well except for 5.3 where I run windows .bat. Than file runs and I check SSH and click on jailbreak. After that it runs for a couple of seconds and then errors out: " Cannot connect to your device: Please plug your iPod/iPhone into your computer..." I have re-connected the iPhone and also rebooted my machine a couple of time but to no success. Can you please help me out. Thank you very much.
  • Nick: Sounds like Installer.app didn't install with the correct permissions. Did you install it with jailbreakme.com? You can either restore the phone and re-run jailbreakme.com, or you can SSH to the phone and run "chmod -r 777 /Applications/Installer.app/". If you aren't comfortable with SSH, restoring is probably the easier solution.
  • Nick
    Hello everyone.
I have proceeded according to this guide and I am in step 4. The installer icon appears on the iphone and there is nothing there. A blank white screen appears when I tap it, and disappears back to home after abput 10 seconds...... what must I do?
    Thank you.
  • hahahaha
Thank you for your tutorial. Its so helpful.
  • It works like a charm. Slow, involved, but a charm nonetheless. Thanks, Brad. I definitely owe you a beer!
  • Songkrant
    Stephen Collins,

Stephen, your phone is capable to be 1.1.2 too. My iphone was 1.0.2 and used iUnlock before.

Before, I followed steps from Brad, my phone was 03.14.08_G & v1.0.2, I had to "Virginize" as described in
"How to "Virginize" an unlocked phone before update to 1.1.1"
    http://iphone.unlock.no/

Once, your phone is "Virginized" then update it to be 1.1.1.

When yours is become 1.1.1, then you can follow steps from Brad.

This is the way I made mine from 1.0.2 to be 1.1.2.

Again, many many thanks to Brad and Fredrik Grevstad of "iphone.unlock.no".

    (^_^)
    Happy Holidays to Everyone!
  • Brad, my previous (and functional) unlock wasn't done with anySIM but with iUnlock. It seems that if that's the case, I'm stuck with 1.0.2 as revirginising and updating leaves you with a phone that has a non-working phojne and SMS component. Sucks. Any ideas?
  • Karim K
Thanks Brad... When do you think the crack will be out?
  • Karim: As I've said a few times in the guide, you can't get unlock a phone that comes out of the box with firmware 1.1.2.
  • Karim K
it can't be unlocked... i followed all the guide.... it didnt workk.... ive got the newset one... cant u help... thanks again..
  • Karim K
Hey guys.... i recently bought an Iphone from Apple shop.. (with the newest version of 1.1.2). i cant find anyway to unlock it.. IN NEED OF HELP... thanks alot
  • bugs: You are a highly annoying individual. If you are not prepared to read the guide and follow it, then I am not prepared to help you when you have problems. I have blocked you from posting comments on this blog.

Anyone else that has any problems, and has bothered to actually follow the instructions, I am more then happy to help you.
  • bugs
aw. sorry brad (pitt). remember, real men dont read manuals ;)
  • Alex
Thanks for the quick reply. I'm gonna try the upgrade and see what happens.
  • bugs: The page that I linked to has a link to it. I don't maintain that link, if it is broken then you will have to find it yourself. If you read my comment, I said START THE GUIDE AGAIN AND REVIRGINIZE BEFORE RUNNING ANYSIM. Obviously this means do it it firmware 1.1.1. Please do not post here again unless you have read what is written, you are cluttering up the comments with useless questions.

Alex: If you do a jailbroken upgrade, then all your apps should work fine on the new firmware. You will have to reinstall them, but I haven't hit an application that doesn't run on 1.1.2 yet.
  • bugs
and one thing brad, can i revirginized my phone even in 1.1.1? thanks. i think i need to sleep first... got 24 hrs working my iphone...
  • Alex
I have a fully functional, jailbroken and unlocked 1.1.1 I have a bunch of apps that I really like such as Apollo, mobile rss, customize, solitaire, ebooks, etc etc. Im considering upgrading to 1.1.2 because i hear people saying that the iphone runs faster and more stable. But im worried that my 3rd party apps wont work. Any thoughts on this?
  • bugs
yup i think so. but i think iam stuck at virginizing my phone... btw, wer can i found d file of revirginizing_tool.zip? i think d rapidshare link is broke. thanks
  • bugs: No offense, but you really aren't good at reading instructions are you? The AppSnapp website says to wait at least 5mins before assuming it failed and manually restarting your phone.
  • bugs
brad, before revirginizing... i have to 1.1.1 and jailbreakme again... any idea how to fasten up d jailbreaking? coz its takes 4hrs of my time :D i usually waiting 60-120 secs per jailbreaking before i start again... thanks
  • bugs: Where in the guide does it tell you to run anySIM on firmware 1.1.2? Of course it will hang. Can I suggest you start the guide again, and follow what is written, revirginizing before running anySIM.
  • bugs
after reading above, i think i will revirginized my phone... (devirginized again) thanks brad... ill still working on it...
  • bugs
oooooo... my phone hangs.... i upgraged to 1.1.2 then anySIM... aw! lols
  • bugs: No, I'm not wrong. anySIM 1.1.2u RUNS on firmware 1.1.1, but UNLOCKS the baseband firmware from system firmware 1.1.2. There is a BIG difference between baseband and system firmware. This is why the first two steps are upgrade then downgrade, this leaves you with system firmware 1.1.1 and baseband firmware from system firmware 1.1.2. Just follow the guide.
  • bugs
hey... r u not worng with your tips? i found my problem. ur anySIM is 1.2.1u... is it for firmware 1.1.2 not for 1.1.1? it says dat, anySIM cannot unlock my phone...
  • bugs
    oki ill try again... thanks...
  • bugs: If it still says invalid SIM after page 1, then something has gone wrong with anySIM. You will have to revirginize as I described above. At the end of page one, you should be on the network, but there is the possibility of crashing phone and SMS apps, which is what page 2 is for.
  • bugs
last nite, still "invalid sim card" after my page one. dats why, i go for page 2. thanks!
  • bugs
fast reply huh! thanks! by the way, any tip for fast installing page 2? or should i use anysim for 1.1.2?
  • bugs: Once you have everything on page one done, see if your phone and SMS apps crash. If they do, then you need page 2.
  • bugs
nevermid. at last! got it... d jailbreak. btw, this is my second try... m from philippines. is it really working your page 2 tips?
  • bugs: The jailbreak doesn't reverse itself, it either worked, or it didn't. Either you aren't leaving it long enough (it should reset itself after going back to the activation screen after a few minutes), or it half worked, in which case you should restore firmware 1.1.1 and try again.
  • bugs
is there any other way not to use jailbreakme.com? i hate to use it. i think it base on luck...
  • bugs
i cant jailbreakme. im using 1.1.1 firmware. i tried maybe 30 times/ 4 hours. but, i jailbreaked my phone last nite. now, cant do it again. may be is it full? thanks!
  • Aziz: Sounds like you have no choice but to revirginize your phone. Start the guide again but when you are on firmware 1.1.1, before attempting to run anySIM, run the revirginizer as detailed in a previous comment.
  • Aziz
    Brad,

I simply used the same name next to the MCN and MCC which was "MTCNet"

I finished through the tutorial for the second time and I still get:
"Incorrect SIM" This iPhone must be used with an approved SIM.

:( I'm very sad its not working for me. This is my second time doing this today and I'm sure I followed every step very carefully :S any hints?

P.S. everything went as you mention except for the "AnySIM" when I was in 1.1.1 it would say successful but won't activate the phone.
  • Aziz
Hello again, am at the step of creating .plist. Here is the case. My carrier name is "KT MTCnet" as it used to show on my nokia. However, I'm an employee of that company and MTC recently rebrbranded to "Zain." officially the network name change is being tested for the phone ranges of employees only.

If I insert my sim card in a nokia phone the network name would be "KW zain"
When I use to have the 1.0.2 the iPhone displayed it as "KT MTCnet"

    1. Question: Which name should I use for carrier name?
    2. Can the Carrier name have spaces? like "KW zain" or should it be "KWzain" in the .plist?

    Thanks
  • Aziz
Thank you for your prompt response. Will do and report back the results. Thanks again.
  • Aziz: That is expected. The version of anySIM is unlocking the baseband of firmware 1.1.2 in a way that only 1.1.2 and understand. Once you continue the instructions and update to 1.1.2 again, your phone will be unlocked. Just continue with the guide.
  • Aziz
    I didn't revirginize my phone
  • Aziz
8 Restart your iPhone, then press the new anySIM icon on your home screen. Follow the instructions from anySIM
9 Once the above is complete, run Installer.app, select the ‘Tweaks (1.1.1)’ category, and install OktoPrep

I'm currently stuck on #8. I followed anySIM instructions. It said it was success. But I still get an invalid sim message.
  • What step are you up to? Did you revirginize your phone before trying anySIM (the instructions are in a comment above)?
  • Aziz
    Dear Brad,

Thank you for your guide. I have been reading all the comments, but couldn't find an answer to my question.

When I got my phone it was 1.0.2 jailbroken and activated. I upgraded to 1.1.1 before reading your guide and tried to use anysim (it said activated, but I was still getting invalid sim) then I upgraded to 1.1.2. Thats when I found your guide.

I followed it. Now, I'm stuck at Anysim again. It says Activated, but it still saying invalid sim. Should I just continue the steps? or should it read my sim at this stage in order to get it working. I tried restarting my iphone but still nothing.

Btw, I'm from Kuwait if that helps.

Thank you very much, and your help is much appreciated.

Brad, Brad, Brad, thanks, thanks, thanks, many thanks, and thanks a lot.

After I followed your instructions on your second page, my phone (with old bootloader) is now full function with 1.1.2 in Thailand.

I wish those of you with 1.1.2 out of the box (with new bootloader) will get your fix soon.

After that then enjoy using your iphone.

  • Anshul: make sure you have 'Community Sources' installed from the Sources category.
  • Anshul
    Hi Brad,
I am currently on firmware 1.1.1 and have successfully ulocked my phone.
I want to upgrade to firmware 1.1.2 but when I open installer.app I cant find OKTOPREP package which you have listed. How do I get that package in my phone.
  • Songkrant: Are you trying to use the iPhone in an unsupported market? It sounds like you need the instructions on page 2 of the guide.
  • Songkrant
Thank you very much Brad for your contribution and patiently answer all the questions.

With you instructions, only on the first page, I got my iPhone updated from
    1.0.2 = 3.01.13_G
    to
    1.1.2 = 4.02.13_G
    .

    I had 3 issues.

    1. I could not received any phone call, no ring. Just the short lines in circularly spinning, the same as when the software updated.

If the caller gave me a few ring (I did not gear anything from my iphone) the short lines spun shortly. I got the home screen.

But it the caller ring about 30 seconds, the short lines kept spinning and restarted the phone.

    2. From 1. I can see the red-dot of un-answered call over the green phone icon, when I clicked on the phone icon and then on the "Recents" icon in order to call back, I got a second of black screen and got the home screen again.

    3. The "sms-Text" green icon had the red-dot of un-read message but once I clicked on it then I got a second of gray screen and got back to the home screen again. However, the SMSD icon is working as the replacement of the "sms-Text" icon.

For those who updated your iphone to 1.1.2, did you get these 3 function?

Thank you aagain to Brad and all of you who shared your experience.
    (^_^)

  • Lencrock2007: Please don't post your IMEI. There is no way of telling what version your phone is from here, but you can see your firmware version by going to Settings > General > About.
  • Lencrock2007
    Hi Brad,

What is the version of the IPhone **** **** ****?

    Thank you
  • @Winnie: No, it shouldn't matter what SIM is inserted. AppSnapp actually patches the security hole it uses once it does its thing, so it is possible that part worked but it didn't get to finish what it does. Just restore firmware 1.1.1 with iTunes and try again.
  • Winnie
    Brad,
I tried installing AppSnapp several times. It just returns to the "Slide for emergency" screen and nothing happens. Does it matter what SIM card I have in the phone? I have an AT&T SIM card that has been activated.
    Thanks!
  • Winnie: you can try restoring firmware 1.1.1 and trying it again, but generally it will work. It can take up to five minutes to restart your phone after returning to the activation screen depending on your internet connection.
  • Winnie
    Brad,
I had previously jailbroken my Iphone and was running AnySim (Can't remember what version) because was traveling out of the country. I think the firmware was 1.0.0. (I was one of the first ppl to purchase it) And I accidentally updated the firmware to 1.1.2 on iTunes. Now my iphone is a piece of junk. I tried restoring the phone but it doesnt work. I followed your guide up till step 8 (When I selected install AppSnap on my iphone safari, a second window pops up and after a few seconds, I'm back at the "Activate iPhone" - it never restarted, so I repeated step 7 again several times. It doesn't work. Please HELP!!
  • Imtiaz: Start the guide again at step 2. Your phone won't be recognized when you first plug it in, but just follow the instructions from step 2.2 onwards. If shouldn't matter that AppSupport is slightly larger, it is more likely that the wrong permissions were set in the file when you uploaded it. After you redo the process, follow the instructions in step 4.7 on this page to change the permissions after uploading AppSupport before restarting your phone.

Saurabh: If you unlocked your phone with a version of anySIM before anySIM 1.1, you will need to revirginize your phone first (see my previous comments on how to do this). Otherwise, just start at step 1.
  • Saurabh
Sorry Brad I have an iphone my bad wrote it as an ipod

    Brad,
Had one question I have an iphone 1.1.1 unlocked with anysim with all the software required for upgrading to 1.1.2. What step should i start at….or should i do a complete restore to 1.1.1 and do it all over again.

Saurabh: You don’t need to unlock an iPod Touch, anySIM wouldn’t have done anything if you ran it on it. If you just want to do a jailbroken upgrade to 1.1.2, use iTunes to do a restore of firmware 1.1.1 and start the guide from step 3, ignoring step 4.3 to 4.8.
  • Imtiaz
    Brad
I followed ur instructions on Page 2. Did everything as mentioned But after rebooting the iPhone it was struck at the apple logo. Could you help me please. The difference between the original Appsupport and the Modified Appsupport was 1 byte. As my country code is 3 digits 974.
  • Hemi: If you didn't follow my guide, then why are you posting here? I gave clear instructions on how to SSH for the purposes of my guide, I am not going to write a guide on how to SSH in the comments of a blog post. Maybe you should ask whoever wrote the guide you did follow?

Barney: No problem. There is a rumor that the next firmware upgrade (1.1.3) supports disk mode, so if you wait and see you might get lucky.

Saurabh: You don't need to unlock an iPod Touch, anySIM wouldn't have done anything if you ran it on it. If you just want to do a jailbroken upgrade to 1.1.2, use iTunes to do a restore of firmware 1.1.1 and start the guide from step 3, ignoring step 4.3 to 4.8.

    Brad,
I did not follow your guide? ...so thanks for nuthing i guess Have a nice day
  • Barney
Thanks, Brad, that does not help. The software wants to copy the files itself, and no other method could resolve the problem so far, simply because I dont know which files to copy and where... Thank you for your quick reply.
  • Hemi: If you can't understand it from the instructions on my guide, there are lots of guides on how to SSH on the internet. Google is your friend.

Barney: No, firmware 1.1.2 doesn't have disk mode, but you can copy files to a jailbroken iPhone through other methods, though I don't know if that would help in your specific situation.
  • Barney
Hello, Brad! I consider upgrading from 1.1.1 to 1.1.2 for the following reason: I would like to use a multiple choice drill software on the iphone, which requires it to support "disk mode". It is originally written for desktop computers but loads the drills to ipods, too. I do not find any reliable info on the web about this function. Does 1.1.2 include disk mode? Thanks a lot!

I have a out of the box 1.1.2 iPhone And I have jailbroken it just to be able to have 3rd party apps. It works great but my voicemail & Edge do not work. Now I have the ssh comands I need to fix it but as I am a noob I have no idea how to ssh into the phone...... Any1 have any help for me .....Thanks so much!!!

    P.S yes I have a 02 teriff.....
  • Nice to see people helping other people in the comments! Rahul is correct, you cannot unlock a phone with firmware 1.1.2 out of the box (this is actually due to the bootloader, not the baseband), but you can downgrade and/or jailbreak them. Note that even if you downgrade, you still cannot unlock it.

Those with firmware 1.1.2 out of the box can follow this guide from step 2, ignoring step 4.3 to 4.8 (the stuff about unlocking).

djepdjep: Sounds like a connectivity problem more than anything. Try YouTube over a reliable WiFi network.
  • Rahul
Rohan: No, you cannot unlock your phone if it came with firmware version 1.1.2 Out of the box.

You can try going to emergency calls: dialing *3001#12345#* and checking the version of the firmware. If it reads 04.02.13_G then there is no known Software Unlock for this YET..

Brad: You do not have to answer my question - I assumed that the version that i read was the baseband version. It was actually the modem version...
  • Rohan
I got a iphone brand new with 1.1.2 as default, so will this process work for that as well.
Also, is it possible to downgrade 1.1.2 to 1.1.1 in this case also
  • Rahul
    Brad,

I just got my phone, for which i had placed an order recently. I went into emergency calls, and dialed *3000#12345#* and pressed call - so as to check my firmware.

My firmware reads 04.02.13_G. Can this be unlocked?

    Rahul
  • djepdjep
    well thank you very much!
    it worked like a charm!
i, however, also have problems with YouTube
it starts, but then says 'Cannot connect to YouTube'
but it still does - but only the 'Featured' videos are shown
and it keeps given the same message 'Cannot connect to YouTube'
    any ideas?
    jeppe
  • djepdjep
i did it again - and now it work
    sorry :)
  • djepdjep
    thanks brad
but when i try to upgrade with iTunes i get the error 1015
and the phone goes into recovery mode
    then i run iNdependence
but i does not take the phone to the activation screen
not matter how long i waits
    any ideas?
  • djepdjep: Use this guide! Upgrade your firmware to 1.1.1 with iTunes, then start from step 3 and ignore everything in step 4 except for part 9 (the unlock stuff).
  • djepdjep
    dear brad
i have an 'out of the box' 1.1.2 iphone that i have downgraded to 1.02 - jailbroken and thus acitvated; i know that there is no way right now to unlock it by software and i will soon be gettig a TurboSim card instead; i would however like to upgrade the firmware to 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 but i can't seem to find a guide to do so with a jailbroken 'out of the box' 1.1.2; can you give me some ideas - or point to such a guide?
many thanks in advance - jeppe
  • Alex: Go to the General tab in Safari's preferences and uncheck "Open "Safe" files after downloading," then re-download the file.

    hey Brad
trying to virginize my phone via 1.1.2-->1.1.1-->1.0.2 everytime i try to download the 1.0.2 restore zip my download on leopard unzips the folder and I can't use it to restore to 1.0.2 any suggestions on where to download file that won't unzip or use file I now have on my hardrive.
    Cheers Aex
  • Luiz: Thanks! A restore won't remove the unlock, but it will remove the jailbreak and the carrier settings from the second page. That means that after a restore, you will be able to use any SIM from a supported market, but not a foreign one. Rather than restoring, can't you just re-set up the sync in iTunes? If you use the same settings as before, you won't have a problem. You can also restore your backup if iTunes prompts you to, as this won't actually do a full restore. You can use any SIM from any country in your phone, but you may have to do the instructions on page 2 depending on the country. You won't have to re-do the instructions on the first page unless you do a full restore.

Josh: Go to the Install tab, then the Sources category, and install a package called Community Sources. That will add a whole heap of new applications you can install.
  • Josh
For some reason my installer app doesnt contain either bsd subsystem or okto prep. When I click on update theres nothing in there either.
  • Luiz
Brad, I'm amazed by your instructions, congratulations...It worked just perfect for me.But I have couple of questions:
    1) Can I do a restore, after it's been unlocked in order to have my contacts and songs back to original without damaging the amazing work to unlock the phone?
    2) What should I do in order to use another SIM card (from another country) besides the one I'm using now? Do I have to do the whole process again?

    I appreciate your help.
    Thank you
  • Adrian: If you can run the phone and SMS applications, your edits are correct, don't stress about it. Since your phone is saying it can't connect to YouTube, and not that YouTube isn't activated (it gets activated seperately to the phone itself), it is more than likely a connectivity problem. Have you tried YouTube over WiFi, or just EDGE? Do you have the same results on both connection methods?
  • Adrian
im not sure about the edits should i just use 1 insted of 01 and it could also be using the US settings since they're supposed to be the same but when i was looking in thru appsupport it had US and 011 am i wrong?
edge is ok now but youtube still says cannot connect and it should work over edge too i did before with previous fw only itunestore is limited to wifi.
what should i do about youtube
and im on Rogers 302 720
  • Adrian: No problem. Those edits sound correct, and if you can launch the SMS and phone applications then you know you've done it right. YouTube should have been activated when you ran the jailbreak, keep in mind it only works over WiFi. What error is it giving? As for EDGE, make sure that the settings were brought in from the plist by going to Settings -> General -> Network -> EDGE and making sure the settings are correct. What carrier are you using?
  • Adrian
thanks brad, i i was typing I instead of lowercase L. Now my problem is youtube is not working and edge doesnt work even tho i edited the apn in the .plist, also im from canada i edited appsupport replacing fr with ca and 33 with 01. Is that right?
  • Adrian: The only things that I could think of that would cause that is that you haven't installed the BSD Subsystem correctly, you are running the command on you local computer instead of the iPhone (as was Mateus' problem above), or you are typing the command wrong (make sure that you aren't using any quotes or anything around it). Also, make sure you are typing a lower case L, and not an I or something - just covering the simple stuff first.
  • Adrian
im having trouble with the command: ln -s Carrier_Country.plist MCCMNC
It doesn't recognize "In" as a comand

    "zsh:command not found: In"

    Help
  • LineRider: My first guess is that it you have tried to unlock your phone more than five times. There is an internal counter that increases every time you run an unlock, and won't allow you to attempt it more than that amount. The first thing you should try is to head to http://code.google.com/p/iphone-elite/wiki/RevirginizingTool and grab the easy revirginizer tool (the first link in the “Scripts to make life easier” section). This tool will reset any previous unlocks and essentially give you a clean, virgin iPhone. Just unzip the package, and follow the instructions in the HOWTO.txt.
  • LineRider
    1: Firmware 1.1.1
2:anySim 1.2u (this one on your web side)
3:First it says copying firmware and when the bar comes to the and it says anysim couldn't copy your iPhone restart it and try again=(
  • ha: Either the Java JRE isn't installed, or the path to the Java executable isn't in your system path. Either way, probably the easiest option is to just download and reinstall the Java Runtime Environment from http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/?intcmp=1281 which should fix it up.
  • ha
'java' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

what does that suppose to mean?
  • ha: Click Start -> Run and type cmd and press enter. Drag the windows.bat file from from the folder it is in to the command window that appeared then press enter. It should then let you read what the error message is.
  • ha
okay, i solved my problem from last post. now, my problem is with the last step. on step 5, part 2, i downloaded the 1.1.2 jailbreak, but when i open the "windows.bat" file, it opens and immediately closes. any ideas? i already have java installed. thanks.
  • ha
at step 3 part 8, i'm experiencing a problem. it seems that after installing appsnap, my phone will go directly to the activate screen. the phone blacks out, but never restarts (basically goes in to lock mode). i have set my phone settings to never-unlock. i tried restarting many times only to come to this problem again. any ideas? thanks.
  • LineRider: Three questions: What firmware are you trying to run anySIM on? What version of anySIM are you using? What is the error that you are getting?
  • LineRider
    I have a BIG problem!!!
I have an iPhone witch had in the beginning firmware 1.02 but i accidentally recover an update to 1.1.2. Then i followed this guide but I screwed up something (anysim worked as it should) so i decided to recover it to firmware.1.1.2. Everything was ok until i tried to crack iPhone with anysim. It just didn't work. I tried several times and nothing worked. What should I do to crack it?
  • Mateus: The SSH icon is all you want, SSHed is just a short form of saying 'used SSH to get access to your phone.' SSH is a way of you seeing a 'command line' from your iPhone on your local computer, allowing you to type commands and send them straight to the phone. You just need to follow steps 11 and 12, you installed the SSH 'server' to your iPhone, you need to install an SSH 'client' (you are on Windows, so that will be PuTTY) to your local computer, then use the client to connect the the server. That will leave you with a command line on your local computer that is actually passing commands to the iPhone directly. Your iPhone will understand the ln command.

Rahul: No, there is currently not a safe method of unlocking a phone that came with firmware 1.1.2 out of the box, though this should be solved soon. Keep an eye out here, I will write a new guide once there is a safe way to do it.
  • Rahul
I have recently bought an IPhone and i would like to unlock it. It comes with firmware 1.1.2. Can a phone that comes with firmware 1.1.2 be unlocked using the above process?

Thanks for the excellent guide on unlocking the iPhone.
  • Mateus
    Nice point.
    I've installed BSD and OpenSSH
but it only shows SSH icon, not
the SSHed. And I'm running the
    command on my local computer.
    Simple stuff? ;-)
    Best, Mateus.
  • rider47: Just use iTunes to restore firmware 1.1.1 and try again, unfortunately AppSnapp is far from perfect. Just make sure you restore and not update.

Mateus: So are you on the second page, trying to get your carrier set up correctly? If you have installed the BSD Subsystem, then the ln command will definitely be there. Are you sure you have SSHed into your phone and are running the command on it, not on your local computer? Sorry, just checking the simple stuff first.
  • Mateus
    Hi Brad,
I've done all the process, checked and reinstalled the packages
but I still have the 'command not found: In' showing up, like
    mentioned here. Any tip?

Thanks for your help and patience.
  • rider47
    Hi Brad,
I have successfully activated firmware 1.1.1. When I installed AppSnap my Iphone restarted and activated but now I cant see installer.app on home screen. What should I do?
  • Alex: Sorry, you guys keep commenting while I'm replying! That probably means the BSD Subsystem hasn't installed properly in step 2.2, so you might want to uninstall it and OpenSSH and try reinstalling them. The method I just posted should work though.

Steve: When you double click the MobDev Tool, point it to the unzipped MobileDevice_7_4_2.framework folder and click open. It then displays a window that looks exactly the same, but is actually asking you to point to iNdependence.app. Find it, then click the open button again.
  • Alex: It is pretty clear in step 11 on page 2. Alternatively, you can open Fetch, go into the /Applications/anySIM.app folder you uploaded, and right click on the first file in the list (it should just be called anySIM) and select Get Info. In the new window, open the Ownership and Permissions pane, and check the Execute box underneath Owner, then click Apply.
  • steve murphy
    HI,
I am having a problem getting the mobdev tool to see the mobiledevice folder in the chooser. It either doesnt highlight it as a choice if its a zip or u have to go into it if its just a folder and the choose a particular file.Which one?
    thanks steve

  • iLover
Brad: Success! Thanks for all the help. I just needed to read and re-read and absorb your instructions. It is well written, but I'm just a dumbass and too impatient :") cheers - iLover
  • iLover: Sorry, I didn't see your last comment before posting mine. You don't need to activate to downgrade the firmware, just follow the instructions in step 2. When you restart the phone as advised, iTunes will allow you to restore it even though it isn't activated.
  • Peter: Have a look at page 2 and do step 11, then type the command into the SSH window.

iLover: What version of the firmware did you run the revirginizer on? What version of the firmware did you try and update to? Try performing step 2, which is called a DFU restore. Turn on your phone and let it sit at the Apple logo, plug it in, then proceed from step 2.2
  • iLover
I had to update iTunes 7.5 and was forced to restore. The phone is now back to it's unactivated state. I cant activate it to even try to downgrade to 1.1.1. Am I going to have to wait for updated activation software support (hack)?
  • iLover
    Brad,
I revirginized and tried to updated. Um, now it's stuck on the apple logo and and wont even restore. What are my options?
  • Peter Pratelli
Thanks for the advice you have been a great help you certianly know your stuff but I am some what simple minded so could you explain to me exactly what you meant by "You need to SSH into your iPhone" is this the from the phone files on my computer or on my phone either way i am not quite sure were i would type the command, thank you for your time once agian!!!!

    Peter
  • Mike: I've updated that step in the guide with the specific function to use in UltraEdit.

Peter: Your SFTP program has uploaded the directory with the wrong file permissions. You need to SSH into your iPhone, then type "chmod -R 775 /Applications/anySIM.app" (without the quotes). You should then be able to use the slider.
  • Peter Pratelli
Hi sorry to bug you agian,

I am performing the following task using XP and UltraEdit. I select, Search, and Find from the menu but no results found in the App..file:

Open the AppSupport from the last step in either editor, and use the application’s go to function (Find -> Go To Address in HexEdit) to go to address 0xA0AC.

    Thanks
  • Peter: Sorry, the version of AppTapp installer I linked to was actually for the Mac, I have corrected the link now. From the emergency screen, you actually want to be entering *#307#, add the * to the start.
  • Peter Pratelli
    Hi again,

Started to upgrade however your version of AppTap Installer doesn't want to run from the download it just shows a bunch of files and folders none off which will open. Tried running AppTap Installer from the downloads I had when I first unlocked my phone but then when I went on to dial #307# nothing happened what do I do.
    thanks

  • iLover: Before doing this guide, head to http://code.google.com/p/iphone-elite/wiki/RevirginizingTool and grab the easy revirginizer tool (the first link in the "Scripts to make life easier" section). This will reverse your hardware unlock (geohot's method was a proof of concept, and the software unlocks are far superior now) and allow you to follow this guide. After revirginizing, upgrade to 1.1.1, then start this guide.
  • iLover
I did the GeoHot hardware unlock. thanks
  • iLover: What specific hardware unlock did you do? With some hardware unlocks, you can upgrade straight to 1.1.1 through iTunes, then start the guide from step 3.
  • iLover
Brad, I did a hardware unlock and upgraded to 1.0.2. I would like to take advantage of the increased volume offered in 1.1.1, but don't know where to start. Does the tutorial work hardware unlocked phones?

    cheers
  • Peter: I've linked to PC and Mac alternatives for all the software needed in the guide, so you should be fine. The only sketchy part is using AppTapp to bring the iPhone out of the special recovery mode, but it does work.

fepe: What step did you get up to in the guide? If you had 1.1.2 running unlocked and jailbroken, why did you run a restore? If you restore, you need to start right back at the start of the guide, downgrading to 1.1.1. When you do the instructions in step 2 of the guide, what is the error message you are given? Error 1015 is expected.
  • fepe
    hello,

I had a problem with this guide, and the iphone didn't what to restart, it stay in the apple logo. the iphone was on 1.1.2 upgraded from 1.1.1 activated, jailbreak and unlocked. So i did a restore of the 1.1.2 again from itunes to make it work again but now im stuck cause i can't downgrade back to 1.1.1 itunes give me a error message (1). I been reading about this error and it seems that I put it in a state of an OTB iphone. Can some one help me to see is I have to wait for a new jailbreak having the phone in 1.1.2 or im still can downgrade the phone.

    Hi

Just wanted to know weather the method will also work for pc users I went though the unlocking process and am currently unlocked on 1.1.1. but that process seemed to cause some problems for pc users.

  • Mike: If you're phone came out of the box with 1.1.2, then you can't unlock just yet. If it came with an earlier version and you have already upgraded, then follow the instructions from step 2.

    Hi,

I have a locked phone running 1.1.2. Do I need to downgrade to 1.1.1 in order for this to work.

Great article by the way and I'm interested in testing this process.

    Thanks

I'm still on 1.0.2 also. Thanks for your help.
  • Firmware 1.1.1 added a Reigon menu in the settings screen with a list of about 30 supported reigons for number formatting and languages. If your country is in there, it will know your number formats (Australia is in the list). You still need the above hackery to use the phone on foreign networks though, that menu just controls the number formatting and UI language.
  • Brad, interesting. What about proper international number formatting, rather than US? So, can I have:

    nnn nnn nnnnnnnn

or other valid variants, rather than:

    nnn (nnn) nnn-nnnn
  • Stephen: The biggest advantage for me was under firmware 1.1.2, the iPhone can receive SMS messages with a sender ID. These are messages from things like banks and phone carriers that come from a word and not a number. Previous firmware revisions just garbled these messages.
  • Brad, I'm still on 1.0.2. Is the benefit of updating so great that it's worth it?

I'll do it if I have to, but there are bigger priorities for me.
