It’s slowing down a lot for mobile handset type news at CES, so I thought I would summarize my opinions on some of the major handset product announcements. Check it out after the jump.
- Motorola ROKR E2 – I am so happy for Motorola, they have finally seen the light and released a music handset that is decent. It is a 200% improvement over the E1, with a better camera, no song limit, music keys, full-size SD storage, USB 2.0 – way to much to mention here. The new Motorola UI is looking a lot better as well.
- Sony Ericsson W810 – even though this is only an incremental update to the W800, I still like the design – it combines the best elements of the K750 and W800, in my opinion. Quad-band and EDGE support is nice, and I really like the new d-pad, but I am a bit let down overall, though. With Sony shipping 4GB and 8GB memory cards this year, the Walkman handsets may prove good competition to the Nokia N91.
- Palm Treo 700w – I flat out think this is going to be a hit. I would like to see long-term reviews on it, but everyone likes the Treo form factor, and Windows Mobile 5.0 is a very polished OS – dare I say, better than Palm OS?
- Samsung T709 – Though I am not 100% convinced that WiFi is really needed in a non-smartphone, I do like the overall package of this handset. I would have liked to have seen a better camera though, as it is obvious that this is a higher end handset. Samsung are aiming this at business people, so I will give them a break on this one.
- Samsung A930 – I really think this is going to be a hit with the younger crowd. It isn’t as well featured as Motorola or Sony Ericsson’s offerings, but with the V-CAST music download service I think it will still prove popular.
There are lots of other releases from CES, but these are the ones that are most prevalent in my mind right now.
