While I am infinitely happy with my position with MobileBurn, and I whole heartedly believe that online/digital media is the way of the future, I have been thinking lately of branching out and attempting to secure some freelance print media work. I will be relocating to the US in about a year’s time to deepen my involvement with MB, but in the interim, I wouldn’t mind getting more experience in print as well. Supplementing my income a little would also be great.

Freelancing is something that appears quite daunting to me. It seems that it takes a lot of time and effort to break into the scene, and even when you do get contacts, it is a very competitive market. If I do go ahead with it, I will try to document my experiences networking and writing here, as both an outlet and in the hope that others might get some benefit out of it. I wonder whether having work published online holds much esteem with print editors; I believe I am a good writer, and my work on MobileBurn should be proof of this. Time will tell, I suppose.

Well, it finally happened. The chances of being burgled are fairly high these days, and let’s face it, I’ve had a pretty good run to not have been broken in to before. But last night it happened…

Gone is, well, pretty much everything electronic in my apartment. Not only have I lost home entertainment items like the Xbox 360, as well as my desktop computer (including two LCD monitors and scanner) and notebook computer, but also my external backup hard drives – meaning years and years of data is now gone. While this is a painful experience for anyone, it is even more so for someone like me who works from home. This has absolutely disabled me until I can get a new computer, and even then, the damage done from lost data cannot have a price put on it.

Gloves were used, so there are no fingerprints, and the chances of me getting anything back is slim to nothing. While I will not go into a deep, philosophical discussion about what it is that makes people behave in this manner, I will say that it is quite upsetting seeing how immoral humanity has become.

While I can spend time obsessing over the loss, the fact of the matter is that I am not hurt, and life will continue. The experience has shown me the good side of humanity as well, though, and I would like to extend the most heartfelt thank you to my friends, family, and girlfriend who have been incredibly supportive, and offered more help than I could ever hope for.

And on life goes…

Let me ask a question: Are you a bad blogger if you don’t post to a schedule? I have been terribly busy getting through the piles of pictures and notes I have from CeBIT in Hannover last week, and so I haven’t posted much at all. Am I a bad blogger?

I hate it when people post to a schedule when they have nothing to say. I have been reading Atariboy‘s blog for a little while now, and it is generally pretty interesting stuff. The trouble is, since he committed to posting three times a day (even though he hasn’t been), the quality of posts has gone down. I would prefer to post more infrequently if said posts have a higher quality.

There are many people on my reading list that don’t post daily. I don’t unsubscribe from them because when they do post, I enjoy reading it. They aren’t bad bloggers because of this.

Which brings me to my second point. Is there such thing as a bad blogger? There is so much emphasis out there on posting regularly, and if posts aren’t regular, a lot of people unsubscribe. I am of the belief that you can’t be a bad blogger, so long as you are satisfying your own aims for your blog. I don’t commit to daily blogging, purely because with the travel I do and other work commitments, there are times where that isn’t feasible. What I do commit to is blogging when I feel I have something that I want to get off my chest, or if I see something really cool.

That is my $0.02.

First things first, I should introduce myself. My name is Brad Kellett. I live in Australia and I am a journalist for a tech website that I do not wish to mention just yet (more on that in a future post, maybe…). In past times I worked as a Unix Systems Administrator for a large University, as well as a web designer before that, and a whole lot of other things outside of technology before that.

I call myself platform agnostic – that is I really have no allegiance to any computer platform/OS. My main system at home is a Windows XP box, my laptop is an iBook, my home file server runs FreeBSD, and I used to administrate Solaris systems. A bit computer ambidextrous I guess.

I am an absolute gadget fanatic. Though I follow a rule that I picked up off Chris Pirillo – get rid of a gadget before you get something new. It just saves the clutter that way.

So, that’s a short bit about me (you will pick up a lot more, if you stay around to read in the future), but what about the blog?

For a long time now, I have been reading other peoples writings and form my own opinions on the topics, as most people do. I want to use this blog as a way to express these opinions (as most blogs are). As well as this, I want to post my own writings on the world of technology, and hopefully generate some opinions of my own, and report on some of the issues going on in the world of technology.

Yes – its just another blog. But what makes this, and every other blog different from one another, is that you get the author (that’s me!), which brings along a personal style of writing and opinion. So if you like what you read, feel free to subscribe to the feed, post in the comments, and generally keep in touch.

Thanks for listening!
