How to Not Get Fired for Blogging

Jul 30 2005 Published by Brad Kellett under Commentary, Off-Topic

Chris Pirillo has again cracked me up with a list of 10 guidelines on how to not get fired for blogging (link at the bottom). Number 10 is a gem:

10. Cats. Write about cats. A lot.

In his post he mentions an imaginary domain – ihatemyjobandboss.com, and mentions that you shouldn’t host your blog there. This has given me an idea though… Does anyone actually want to host a blog there? I’m not being sarcastic here, I’m thinking of registering the domain and open it up to host blogs (well, maybe just give away the space, I’m no blogger.com remember).

Any comments?

Motorola Is Starting to Impress

Jul 27 2005 Published by Brad Kellett under Mobile Tech

For a long time, I have been totally uninterested in Motorola handsets. They all looked the same, and none had anything that really caught my interest.

That is until the Motorola MOTONOW press event on Monday. During the event and the day following, Motorola have finally got my attention. I posted some news and pictures on MobileBurn. My favorite at the moment? The A732, my story on MobileBurn with pictures is here. You have to love a slider with a touch sensitive keypad for ‘finger-writing recognition’.

Way to Copy, Microsoft

Jul 25 2005 Published by Brad Kellett under Microsoft

So, I just checked out the new Microsoft Virtual Earth, here are my first two thoughts:

  1. “This is really slow compared to Google Maps
  2. “This is such a rip off of Google Maps

To clarify point one, it is much slower on than the Google equivalent on my iBook in Safari. I would also love to try the 45 degree angle deal that I am hearing about, but none of the menus work for me.

On the second point, this reminds me of the WWDC 2004 poster – “Redmond, Start Your Photocopiers”.

Tom Raftery doesn’t give it a very good report either.

Windows Vista – Not Very Original

Jul 24 2005 Published by Brad Kellett under Microsoft

You would think that Microsoft would come up with something a little more original for their next version of Windows. Here is a list of technology companies using the Vista name that I can think of:

I am sure there is more, if you can think of any post them in the comments. The big question would be, will any of these companies have grounds for a trademark battle with Microsoft? Or each other? I’m not a lawyer, I wouldn’t know, but I would love to see Microsoft have to make some payouts on this.

Scoble Misses the Mark, Again….

Jul 24 2005 Published by Brad Kellett under Apple, Commentary, Microsoft

Sure, MacDailyNews did talk a lot of smack about Mac OS X doing everything Vista is bringing to the table, but unfortunately Scoble totally missed the mark with his reply.

I believe MacDailyNews was talking smack about software, all your examples are hardware Scoble – can I see an indication of the relationship here? Sure, Tablet PCs are nice, and there isn’t an equivalent Mac, but can we keep to comparing apples to apples? Give me some OS examples please, Scoble.

The A-List Talk Continues

Jul 23 2005 Published by Brad Kellett under Commentary, Off-Topic

I am really staring to enjoy this little conversation. Kent Newsome posted an excellent response to Randy Charles Morin’s A-list post, which prompted another great post from Richard Querin. I would really recommend reading these posts.

One thing really caught my eye in Richard’s post, from the last paragraph:

it’s interesting that my family-oriented blog will likely never see even 10 regular readers, but it may become just as important to me as this one.

What a great comment. That really puts everything in perspective for me. Sure, it would be fun to have thousands of hits to your technology blog, but the family is still what counts.

Intimate writing is still an important part of life. Writing a family-orientated blog is like writing a letter, and I think it is important to not get carried away with trying to be a public entity. I respect family blogs as much as any other.

Thanks Richard.

Personally, my family doesn’t even know I write a blog. If they are interested in the type of things that I write about, then they will find this site eventually. Why should I pressure them to read and respond to something that they may not care about, just because they are related to me? If I wish to talk about family things, I would write an email/letter, or follow the suggestion of a family-orientated blog. I am not forcing anyone to read this, but if you like what I have to say, please feel free to subscribe, write in the comments, email me, or post to your own blog and send a Trackback. Lets bring blogging back to the community building it started as.

Windows Vista Beta Schedule

Jul 23 2005 Published by Brad Kellett under Microsoft

ActiveWin are reporting the Windows Vista beta schedule will be as follows:

  • Beta 1 on August3, 2005
  • Beta 2 in early 2006
  • RTM in late 2006

I would defiantly love to be on the beta for this, but short of sending two pounds of chocolate to the test manager, I think I have very little chance…

Still, as I haven’t had a hands on yet, I am still to pass judgment on Vista. I still have a lot of excitement for the release of the new OS, unless I buy a Mac in the mean time that is. Plus there is the little naming conflict I reported on here.

Moved to FeedBurner

Jul 23 2005 Published by Brad Kellett under News

After all the talk about A-List linking and site readership, I got a little curious about who is actually reading this, and as B2Evolution’s feed statistics are not the best in the world, I have decided to move the feed on to FeedBurner. If anyone is currently subscribed to the old feed, I would really appreciate it if you changed the URL to http://feeds.feedburner.com/Pantsland, or use the updated buttons in the sidebar.

Any opinions on this change? Please post in the comments, I would love to hear from you.

A-List Linking

Jul 22 2005 Published by Brad Kellett under Commentary

Randy Charles Morin has a very interesting write up on A-List linking here, but I am much more interested in Richard Querin’s reply.

“Why is that?” I hear my (maybe) 4 readers ask? Because he raises a point that is very close to my heart: he (and I) write because of the enjoyment factor! I don’t write because I want to see my hit count go through the roof, I do it because I like to express myself, and hopefully be a little witty and helpful sometimes.

My day job is Contributing Editor for MobileBurn. I do that because I love writing, and I love gadgets. Getting paid for it is only a perk – like mashed potato with my steak.

If your reading this and enjoying it, please post a comment. Even if just one person reads this blog and likes it, I’m ecstatic.

Pirillo Replies to the Vista name

Jul 22 2005 Published by Brad Kellett under Microsoft

Chris Pirillo gives some suggestions on what Microsoft could have called the new version of Windows – hilarious Chris. I especially like this one: Windows Scoble.
